Electricity.

Without it, we would be powerless...(my little joke).

Allow me to demonstrate: Black out an entire metropolis. Observe the chaos.

QED!

As for fire, indeed you can't argue with it...Fire has limited debating skills and will likely win and burn us. However, we didn't exactly invent fire, we learned to harness it and use it (and only so much).

I actually have a more systemic vision of the world. I don't think a single invention made us strong. I thing it is a system of inventions which made us strong. 1 invention branched out and spawned multiple applications throughout multiple fields (Laser, ...), and when combined with other inventions, resulted in another invention...

The Internet may turn up to be the greatest invention of OUR lifetime. Then again the Internet is more a SYSTEM of inventions than a single one. It is also a mighty enabler of more technological, scientific and medical advances, partly because it allows to share knowledge instantly.

OK, first Jason_Els goes all Noam Chomsky on us and then Domisoldo throws everything into Gestalt . . . I'd say the first imortant invention was learning how to make alcoholic beverages (a cheeky little Pinot Noir, a saucy sauvingon -- and beer) which enabled us to temporarily change the chemistry of our brains, for better or worse. After that it's all the reverse engineered stuff they've been cranking out from the discovery of that grounded flying saucer in Roswell -- VCR's, mobile phones, Photoshop, imaginary friends, etc.

The same could be said for electricity, so I don't think you've drawn any distinction.

Anyway, the thread titles specifies either of discoveries or inventions. Aside from keeping people warm, discovering how to start fires was crucial to sciences like metallurgy, pottery, chemistry, and arsonry. :biggrin1:

The railway.

It moved man into the industrial age and opened up America.

It was also invented near to where I live so I am a litle biased.

That's the north east of England if you did not know.

language.

language wasn't invented, discovered or harnessed. The human animal has a natural biological predisposition for it. If all language was forgotten, there would be completely new languages within a single generation.

I thought maybe you'd forward photography. Itself pretty important.
