If you had to say, what would be the single most important life lesson you've learnt, the one thing you wish you knew right from the start? Just wondering, should be a lot of wisdom out there!

One simple thing would be the ability to see the other side.

To me, that's really the root of better understanding.

    Two answers:

    The 'other' being is 'you.'

For me it is to treat others as you would want to be treated:

don't speculate about a person without walking in their shoes,
don't loan anything...be willing to give it,
don't expect life to make sense,
don't put God into a neat little box...he is bigger than anything that can contain him.

    Two things.

    Know yourself.

Do unto others as you would be done by.

That adults behave little differently than children, only with considerably more capability of doing damage.

And in both cases, they don't mean "an eye for an eye", which is actually just plain old revenge. As they say, "'An eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind."

Don't look for wisdom or life lessons from internet sites devoted to phallus worship.

Go, not knowing where. Bring, not knowing what. The way is long, the path unknown.

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.

"Life" is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

Why not? If you cannot find truth where you are, where do you expect to find it?

    Thanks Prime Minister -
    Fantastic question.
The best thing to have been able to know from the start would have been humility.
I was brought up with the velvet ropes being parted for me. I took for granted that I would state my name and the Red Sea would part before me. My birthright was one of tremendous arrogance and entitlement.
While that was useful at the time and expected and I enjoyed that, I shudder at providing my children with such a 'birthright'.

It's a quote from Dogen. Think about it, and how it relates to the conversation.

I am so grateful for my parents and my family...we never knew we were priveleged. I admire my parents so much, I couldn't have had better parents if I'd asked for them! They are a true example of graciousness, humility, what it really means to be charitable and giving, a strong work ethic, honesty and love.

    36 -
That is the best thing that your parents were aware while bringing you up.
I hope I am able to be so fortunate with my children.
