The aliens are microbial just as all life here was for three-and-a-half billion years. Took another 600 million years for one particular bipedal hominid species to evolve and invent gods, goddesses and other imaginary friends like mermaids and Santa. ;)

At the risk of disappointing those indoctrinated into religion, Tom Hanks and children everywhere, the obvious answer is :emoji_alien:.

Although there is no direct proof of any of the choices, the fact we know there are many other extrasolar planets that could potentially harbor life and we have found life can be diverse and live under the most adverse conditions, makes it the only logical choice.

That and the existence of the implant I shit out last week.

Sticking with mermaids
Seeing your answer and the Canadian flag reminded me of a Canadian mermaid sighting in 1967 I read about
Dave Obee: Mermaid had no legs, but story does

And a follow up: Dave Obee: Mysterious Mayne Mermaid was real, sort of

My answer also is, 'aliens' like the Navy videos. Also apparently a Galactic Federation?
Former Israeli space chief says aliens exist, and Trump knows about it

Aliens. Just another anthropomorphic myth of salvation from the heavens. We just can't help ourselves can we?

BTW with eight billion of us on the planet (and millions of other species) why would any human think we're alone?

I don't think God existing is something that can actually be evaluated in terms of likelihood, so I'm going to go with aliens, though I question whether that actually is a great likelihood. It's just that mermaids are the sort of thing that we would have expected to see some sort of evidence for by now. And Santa is clearly just a cultural artifact.
