Hi,

I used to be a runner, and always my motivation was the next race, or maybe I'd set a time target for a particular distance, or a route.

Now I'm older, the joints aren't holding up, and I've put on weight, feel unfit, that's the worst bit. I keep toying with weight training, and I enjoy it, like the feeling of using muscles to the max. I guess the problem is, when the going gets tough, say I'm busy elsewhere, or feeling low, then training tends to be the first thing to be cut. I just need that extra little voice that says if I miss training I wont hit my target.

Just wondering if other people get this. Just feeling a little better of not looking quite as bad aren't really goals that are working.

Cut out the bad fats in your life and replace with good ones. You will feel better as the pounds drop off. Keep your eyes forward. If you miss a day, oh well. Reground and get focused for tomorrow.

I have had multiple surgeries as I was a college athlete and I made joint excuses for years. Once I realized that they were just excuses and worked through the pain a bit, things started to improved. I also use a pre and during work out drink as it helps me push through those tough times and forces you to hit the gym otherwise you will be buzzing like a nut if you drink it and don't go lift, run, etc..

Focus on building muscle, flexibility as they will only decrease your joint pressure as you work to build the muscles that support them. Find an accountability partner to keep your motivated when you cant find it in yourself.

Keep up the good work and don't worry about yesterday .:)

If this provides you with more motivation, think of all the research that points to exercise as being incredibly important for brain health. And, if you are still interested in elevating your heart rate in addition to lifting weights, don't forget about low impact cardio machines such as exercise bicycles, rowing machines and ellipticals that

Maybe just think of it as something that you are doing for you.

Meaning, so many of the things that we put our time, energy, and effort into are for other people or for things that really don't matter in the end, like money.

Exercise is something that you know will benefit your health and improve your mood/appearance. Therefore, you know it's worth effort always. :)

I have found I need a goal to get me into the gym on a consistent schedule. Without clearly defined goals you will find a thousand excuses to miss workouts or not eat properly. Trust me, I know this from experience. When goals are set I pursue them and usually reach them. Without goals I Bob along in the sea with no course set.

And what goals have you set?

I used to compete in bodybuilding shows so back then it was getting into contest shape. Whenever I didn't want to workout I reminded myself that my competition was working out and they were doing it harder than me. I couldn't let that happen.

Later it may have just been getting into beach shape or setting some other similar goal. A good goal is to try to look good naked!

Lifting more each time. That's pretty much what drives me, putting more weight on the bars, or getting one more rep out each week.

Failing that, pre-workout. If you take that stuff, it's a choice of go to the gym or don't sleep that night ;)
