***** Loved the movie... made me even more of a fan of Susan Sarandon, a woman I should definitely have included on the "stars you'd like to fuck" list somewhere else. Don't know whether this is appropriate here, but I've had a chance to date two women in my life following my wife's death, one of whom looks a bit like Susan Sarandon, and one who looks a bit like Geena Davis. When I saw Thelma & Louise, I went bananas. Pissed the hell out of my date.

I give Pirates a 3. Wasn't great, but didn't suck.

Magnolia, a 2. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember thinking it was pretty wierd and the ending sucked (and something about raining frogs).

Texassgirl,

I loved it! OMG anyone who doesnt have two old curmudgeon uncles like that is missing something! I never tire of watching Robert Duvall or Michael Caine. So the two together.... Can't beat it! Definitely a five star film!

Speaking of the eternally sexy Michael Caine, did any one see or like Jude Law's "Alfie"? I can honestly say I love both versions.

I preferred the remake, having it set in New York is a lot more classy then Brighton, they have killer sea gulls there! Seriously, they attack children in their playgrounds!

I love sea gulls

O57- *bump* is a way to bump the thread up, in case your humor slipped me and you were being serious.

I haven't seen Alfie. Should I add it to my list?

next: True Romance

Absolutely!

It will be one of those epiphanal movies that will make you say, "Ahhhh" I am sure you remember the Dionne Warwick classic, "What's it all about, Alfie?" that was the theme song for the first movie. Michael Caine played him ice cold . I dont think Jude Law's "Alfie" could have the same impact since MC's "Alfie" did for commitment phobic men what Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead" did for the 'me generation" . Both gave a raison d'etre and a name for the pathology! I think the updated circumstances in Jude Law's version were able to have the same gut wrenching, butt kicking karmic retribution regardless of the main character's demeanor. Interested yet? I hope so . They are a must see before you die! LOL!

I saw Friday Night Lights last night (***1/2). It was interesting to see that kid and Billy Bob together again. They've both changed so much since Sling Blade.

Natalie Portman. And yeah, I enjoyed Closer. I'd say ***1/2 or ****

I liked the darkness of it--I think my movie tastes are pretty dark anyway. The dialogue was great, I thought.

How about Delovely?

Steve319 ,

PLEASE dont mention that film! Finally a chance to tell the story of Cole Porter correctly and they created "DELOVELY" ! I love Cole Porter's music but his life was so fascinating and they chose to focus on his dysfunctional relationship with his wife. I would have loved to have seen them start with his grandfather and bring it up to his death. We may have gotten a bit more insight into what made him the fascinating man that he really was . They should have stopped with "Night and Day"....

TAG... A poor attempt at humor, I'm afraid.

Alfie was great, but would suffer when seen now due to the improvements in film in general. The movie should be re-done, but there isn't anyone in the world who could play Alfie like Michael Caine.

I'd give it a solid ****. Funny thing is that my parents wanted me to go with them to see it while I was home over Christmas Break. I was like, 'Hey, free movie!' so I went not knowing what to expect. Well it was still really funny, but not the type of movie I'd watch with my parents :D

Troy? I personally liked the movie when I saw it, but I also heard a lot of people who didn't think of it as highly.

I think that if I were able to divorce the movie from my familiarity with The Illiad, maybe I'd have liked Troy.

But I doubt it. :p

The compression of the time frame (didn't the war last a decade?) was probably necessary to keep the dramatic tension of the movie going. OK, I can live with that. And though I miss the role of the gods, I can even sort of excuse the choice to make it a totally "realistic" (and I use that term way loosely) film. (But why do the story at all without the whole Achilles's Heel thing?)

I know: this is a different art form, so maybe changes have to be made. But then Achilles lives to take a ride in the Trojan Horse? Paris makes his escape with Helen? So much romance? A (comparatively) happy ending? >Phah!<

Plus Brad Pitt is an insipid pretty boy. :glare:

I'm getting ready to watch Phonebooth. Anyone seen it?

Phone Booth: ***

It's an original idea, and because it's original, it's been easy to parody -- both SNL and Mad TV have done their takes on it. Unfortunately, the execution falls flat in places, and the ending of the movie doesn't live up to the promise of its original premise. Still worth seeing, though.

(P.S. Beck was on SNL this weekend, and was really good!)

Hmm, okay:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

ACK! And I missed it.

Why is it I only seem to catch SNL when the Jessica Simpson's or Chingy's (Chingies?) of the world are on?

I'm clearly being punished for being so arch and negative today. But it was Brad Pitt! He deserves my useless wrath and derision, right?

(thanks, mindseye, for the Beck update and the Phonebooth info.)

Passing along Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (have a friend's copy but haven't seen it yet). Anyone?

I loved it !

This is an example of the kind of quirky independent films that I enjoy. It was almost surreal .I thought that the two leads were wonderful. A movie well worth seeing in my opinion.

I found this movie absolutely loathsome! I can't stand Jim Carey!
It tries to hard to quirky and just ends up being silly!
I give it * (sorry Naughty )

What about Garden State?
