When was the last time your applaused in a MOVIE.... whether it was
something that happened in the movie, or just the arrival of the main
characters? For me, me and my family have always applaused for films
which introduced the main characters as they appeared, or sometimes, just
in the opening credits. The last time I truly remembering a whole audience
applausing was for the first movie in the Star Trek series, Star Trek - The
Motion Picture...during that, the audience applaused each name in the main
title and also as they first appeared onscreen. The last time I heard any
applause was the fight between Count Dooku and Yoda in the Star Wars
    movie Attack of the Clones.

    What about you?

My spelling is awful..sorry about that!

Other applauses included: The Poseidon Adventure, It's a Mad Mad Mad World,
    various James Bond films.

Im dating myself here, I know. Thanks for replying to this thread!

1990- I saw ROCKY V and at the end where he's fighting Tommy Gunn, half of the audience is chanting so loud you could hear it from the streets.

I've never really heard much applause from others but that last time I applauded in a movie theatre was 2005 at the Land of the Dead opening.

That's not to say that I wouldn't I just don't want to spend that much money to see half the shit they're making these days.

Aside from that I always go to a Rocky Horror showing and always clap, but that probably doesnt count since I also boo and throw shit at the screen.

    Noise makers.

I've heard applause frequently during film festivals. Typically the director or producer is somewhere in the audience when this happens. Kind of a neat experience.

I have never heard an audience 'applause' during a movie,
though I've heard them 'applaud' on a few occasions.

I never saw it in theatres (too young) but when I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on VHS when I was like 8 I clapped and howled my ass off at that scene.

A few weeks ago I saw "The King's Speech". At the conclusion of the scene where the King delivers a broadcast address at the start of World War 2 there was a burst of applause in the theater.

Never have applauded in a movie theater that's more for live theater. I guess there may be applause at the movie premiere if the stars are there.

Applauding a movie, unless it is at a showing attended by its makers, seems to me utterly idiotic. When members of the audience applaud at the end of a movie, I feel like shouting at them: They can't hear you, morons! It is just part of the spreading American disease of applauding fucking anything. It is apparently no longer even considered gauche for people to applaud themselves, as can be seen on television shows made before a live audience.

I don't quite get the level of ire here.

People applauded wildly in cinemas back in the 70's. I assume it happened before then, as well.

I think the comparison to live theater is incomplete. Get 5 guys sitting in a living room watching a ball game and they will yell at the tv. Why? Not so the athletes can hear them, but because they're spontaneously compelled to demonstratively emote. People do this when watching games by themselves. And when it's a shared experience, it only magnifies the tendency toward demonstrative emotion. I would argue this behavior occurs regardless of the level of intelligence. Certainly, it's not limited to "idiots".

With regards to the applauding cinema audiences of which I've been a part, it seemed a perfectly natural behvaior. The audience was expressing approval (see, e.g., Applause - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It's all part of the communal experience of going to a good movie.

That said, I did somewhat disagree with the clapping at the end of the showing of Avatar I attended last year.

I must have completely missed the trend toward "applauding everything".
