My iPod died yesterday, and the guy at the Apple Store recommended I just buy a new one, as repairs are very expensive. (It's $45 for shipping alone, and the fact that it has to be shipped is absurd, IMO. Then the part I'd need is $100-150, and then there's the labor charge. A new iPod costs ~$230.)

Long story short, I need a new MP3 player, and I am ready to sever all ties with Apple. Any suggestions for what I should get?

I've had mixed success with iPods. My friends with Zunes swear by them.

I've owned a 3rd gen IPod nano, a first Gen ITouch and a few lesser known players.
The ITouch is my fav. but I owned a chinese produeced player
with a built in fm transmitter that was pretty cool.

Creative makes some great players and so does iRiver. I would recommend against Apple since other companies make players that rival any iPod with total prejudice. ;)

Me? I have a 60GB Creative Zen Vision:M and it's the best damn music/video player I've ever bought. It's a dated device by about 5 or so years but the thing is remarkable. They are working on a Rockbox port so expect to see awesome things done to it in the near future.

I purchased a Creative Zen M a couple of years ago. It plays mp3s (other formats as well), movies, photos and stores word documents, has an address book and a few other features that I seldom use.
It is also due for a software upgrade which I have been putting off.

The interface is great, a tad bit on the slow side of which I can deal with. The batter life is superb providing several hours of music. (depending on the file size of course)

Over all, I am happy with Creative's products esp the Zen Media player.

I said that I ready (and eager to) sever all ties with Apple.

But regardless, after posting this question on a few sites and reading some reviews of mp3 players, I ordered a Zune yesterday.
