Just curious. Has anybody else here had their MSN or Hotmail account blocked?

Actually it's only the ones I use here. My other "mainstream" accounts are fine.

I receive this message when I try to log in:

Your account has been blocked

Why are you seeing this?

Someone may have used your account to send out a lot of junk messages (or something else that violates the Windows Live Terms of Service).
We're here to help you get your account back.

What do you need to do?

We'll ask you to provide us with a mobile phone number,
(yeah...right), where we can send you a verification code and we'll add this phone number to your Windows Live profile for future use. After you enter the code, you can change your password and sign in.

We've cleaned your account settings

Often customers get here because someone else has access to your account and are using it without your knowledge to send spam. To protect you and your contacts, we've removed any Hotmail auto-replies or linked accounts you may have had.

Checking the TOS reveals this:

You will not upload, post, transmit, transfer, distribute or facilitate distribution of any content (including text, images, sound, video, data, information or software) or otherwise use the service in a way that:

  • depicts nudity of any sort including full or partial human nudity or nudity in non-human forms such as cartoons, fantasy artor manga.
  • incites, advocates, or expresses pornography, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity.

Sigh...it seems Big Brother is watching our chats and our e-mails.

Has anybody else had their accounts blocked?

There are a few reasons why your account has been blocked. I've sent loads of naked pics via hotmail and never had any trouble.

Maybe you left your PC logged on in a public place or in a place where someone else could access it.

Maybe you've been spoofed, you got an email saying you needed to enter your username/password for security or something.

Maybe your "security question" is really easy to answer for people who know you. For example a lot of people have their high school as the security question. Which is pretty easy to guess even if you only know what town or city someone lives in.

Basically it could be almost anything.

Also gmail do the same thing by sending a password/code to your mobile phone. I thought it was dodgy at first but then I checked what site I was on and it was gmail.com so it was legitimate.

Thanks for your reply Incocknito.

There are a few reasons why your account has been blocked. I've sent loads of naked pics via hotmail and never had any trouble.

I've also sent tons of pics over the last ten years and never had a problem until now.

Maybe you left your PC logged on in a public place or in a place where someone else could access it.

I've never left my Mac logged on in a public place, nor does it hardly ever leave my side when I'm out with it, and never turned on let alone logged on.

Maybe you've been spoofed, you got an email saying you needed to enter your username/password for security or something.

Nope

Maybe your "security question" is really easy to answer for people who know you. For example a lot of people have their high school as the security question. Which is pretty easy to guess even if you only know what town or city someone lives in.

My "security question" answer is extremely obscure and would be a one in a billion guess.

Basically it could be almost anything.

Also gmail do the same thing by sending a password/code to your mobile phone. I thought it was dodgy at first but then I checked what site I was on and it was gmail.com so it was legitimate.

I do understand it could be any number of things. I'm a little perplexed because it happened to a ten year account that I've only used for sending pics on. My other main stream hotmail account has not been blocked.

Just to clarify...are you suggesting I send them my phone number and they'll send me a code to unblock my account? Regardless of the content of my past mails?

Appreciate anybody's input here.

Thanks again
