I like variety, and my list is getting a bit old.

Who's got suggestions for some really good upbeat (or slower) songs I could get to really kick my ass into 5th gear when I need it?

I've got fairly broad tastes.

I'm old, so forgive my tastes, but DISCO works for me. Songs that inspire me to push a bit more include:

I Will Survive -- Gloria Gaynor
The Boss -- Diana Ross
Makin' It -- David Naughton
Do Or Die -- Grace Jones
I Need A Man -- Grace Jones
Gloria -- Laura Branigan

There are so many, but those six are first to pop in my mind.

I also like anything by Taylor Dayne.

Off the top of my head, here are some suggestions:

1. At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command (you can play this one all the way through)
2. Tool - Aenima (another one you can play all the way through)
3. M.O.P. - Ante Up
4. Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says
5. Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nothin' to Fuck With

Blessings

If you're doing a lot of lifting, I definitely recommend anything by Rage Against the Machine. When I was in my teens, I loved putting on "Evil Empire" and working out. Maybe the same will hold true for you.

lifting requires the aggro and the heavy bass thump. so love pantera, type o negative, life of agony, slipknot, mudvayne.

the ipod sets the tone and the pace more often than not.

I'm not sure of what your regimen consists of, but if you're doing something with a low impact or some stretching, or even pilates, I'd strongly suggest Portishead's debut record "Dummy" or Esthero's "Breath from Another."
