Mighty_Joe: My best friend had a reasonable profitable small retail music store. You'll notice I said HAD. Due to music downloading, "burning" of borrowed copies and illegal flea market counterfeit sales, he is considering having to close shop. Oh...I might also add, the competition from large chain stores often selling new releases for two or three cents more than what he has to pay wholesale.
I feel for him and the rest of the small independent "mom and pop" type stores. Because of that, I would never download.

Common Sense
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Gangg Starr
Dialated Peoples
Run-Dmc(the godfathers of hip-hop)
Beastie Boys
The Pharcyde
..to name a few

as I got older I got into other kinds of music like jazz..
Miles Davis("Kind of Blue"...is one ofthe greatest lps ever)
Coltrane
Charlie Parker
Les McCann
Monk
Cannonball Adderly
Lou Donaldson
Ornate Coleman
Dizzy
Chick Corea
Stan Getz
Mingus..ect..

then when I got into collage in the early '90's it was all about grunge ...and some ska
Nivana
Alice in Chains(best concert I've ever seen)
Soundgarden
Tool
Pearl Jam
Tad
The Screeming Trees
The Melvins
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones(2nd best concert)

TragicWhiteKnight: Everyone's a nerd of some kind: in my particular case, a music nerd. Since writing about music is like dancing about architecture (which have been known to do whilst drunk. Okay, that's 'on top of architecture...) it's hard to find much to say about it.

Needless to say, I'm a mix-tape addict. At, I'm the typical indie sadsack, loving Morrissey, Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices, (Smog) - along with Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen and other standards.

But at University, I host a 2 hour oddities/comedy radio-show which displays my more avant-garde tastes: kitsch 1960s showtunes, 40s R&B, sea shanties, 80s novelties, 70s porn soundtracks etc.

I recently found an excellent template for creating the 'soundtrack of your life' [which I'll post or PM, if anyone's interested] - unsurprisingly enough, my CD was a little eclectic.

Longhornjok: Tragic, post it - sounds interesting!

If someone asks me what kind of music I like, I usually respond with "good music." It sounds like a cheat, but I find it hard to completely disregard an entire genre even though it may not be my first choice. I've noticed in surveys about this, people tend to single out rap, country, and heavy metal as "dislikes" but to me that's like saying "I don't like any fruit or vegetable." I guess that's possible, but it would strike me as odd. Those genres are so broad and cover such a great range of artists I think there's always something to which one might respond. For example, "country" could include everything from Patsy Cline to Willie Nelson to Dolly Parton to Shania Twain to early Eagles and Linda Ronstadt to Hank Williams to Lucinda Williams to Elvis to Alison Krauss to the Byrds to Garth Brooks to Johnny Cash to Ryan Adams to Dwight Yoakam to Leann Rimes to Dixie Chicks to George Jones/Tammy Wynette to Emmylou Harris to Gram Parsons to that blonde chick who sings "Breathe." hehe

As for me, current faves are Coldplay, Sheryl Crow, Garbage, Foo Fighters, Mary J. Blige, Sigur Ros, Badly Drawn Boy, Blondie (for those "old school" days), Rufus Wainwright, Outkast, Aimee Mann, and Beck. A month from now, that could be a whole new list.

Rock on! :)

Foo Fighters
Silverchair
Metallica (just to name a few)

And sammygirly: If you like Darude then you gotta love "Sandstorm" right? Because that is a really cool song.

SchroederJr: I'm in the same boat as you, Dink. About two a week. I've got pretty eclectic tastes.

My faves are REM, The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, The Notwist, The Dismemberment Plan, The Constantines, Patti Smith... the list goes on.

I've got around 250 CDs right now. How do you store yours, Dink? That's a problem I'm having to deal with now and I can't find a good solution.

When it comes to classical music, Baroque is probably my least favorite. I still cringe whenever I hear Bach's inventions. Though I imagine that's because I had to do so many of the inventions when I was taking piano. Chopin is my all time favorite. A bit cliche, yes, I know, but the man's amazing (Nocturne in E flat being one of my favorite pieces). I also like Satie and Stravinksy a whole lot...

Finnmark: Catching up on a good topic belatedly, as ever !

Just to say that tott666 in his post (12) of May 24th took my own words out of my mouth, even to his short (?) list ... which, as he says, is endless. He neatly said it all for me.

And I just have to add Motown to it, Hapi !

But Im a top 40 whore at heart.

:D

I'm pretty much a top 40 whore too. ;)

I (like most of you I see) have a wide range of favorites, with some notable exeptions. I hate country music. I also hate a classical composer whom I know is very popular and I fear I'll get yelled at for this but oh well. I hate Mozart. I can't stand him.

7x6andchg: GASP!

You hate Mozart? ! ?

Just kidding...I like him but I'm not the biggest fan of Brahms...a chacun son gout..

One of the big reasons I like the idea of filesharing is the one the recording industry has yet to pick up on - maybe I don't like ALL 10 songs on the disc...I like TWO...and I don't want to spend $16+ on TWO SONGS.

Anyone else see it that way? Or is it just me?

TragicWhiteKnight: I've never been a big Mozart fan, 'The Magic Flute' aside; and I've come to hate Brahms through reading so much about him in relation to Wagner - if anyone can recommend a worthwhile piece that would prove he isn't a reactionary "parlour magician" (as Wagner would have it), let me know.

I file-share quite a lot, as a cash-strapped student, but usually only use it to get:

* B-Sides & Rarities
* Out of Print CDs or stuff only available on Vinyl
* Crappy pop I'd never buy in a million years
* Theme songs

The fact I had to pay £10 customs on top of an outrageous price for 2CDs from the USA makes file-sharing much better. Though I have legally purchased at least 15 albums I downloaded first.

SimplyHung: Ahhh snap. Don't get me started. There's too many bands that I like, mainstream and underground, then and now.
Let's just say, my Winamp-3 playlist has 847 tracks, and there's plenty more I want to get.

As for recommendations, here's a lesser-known band (unless you live in the Midwest area):
[link=http://sinkua.organiccrap.com/RustedDearSweetheart.mp3]Rusted (Dear Sweetheart)[/link]
That's Cry For Dawn.
I've been really digging this song lately, too. (Twiztid 8))
[link=http://sinkua.organiccrap.com/BrokenWingz.mp3]Broken Wingz[/link]
(Includes a funny bonus track at the end)

longtimelurker: For music I'll have to say that I am a typical student, being mainly into Indie and Retro (mainly 80s and early 90s, but 70s can be OK).

I tend to have one favourite band at a time which switches around a bit. Up to now these have included Ash, Cranberries, Garbage, Blondie, Muse, Suede.

As a rule, I'm not so keen on rap, hip-hop, garage/dance etc., although when I was at the Edinburgh Festival this year I saw a band playing that was effectively Jazz with either rap, latin or ska lyrics. Not usually my kind of thing at all, but it was really good. Can't remember the name - something to do with Cats.

inquiringmind: Hi all,

Speaking of music today I am wearing black in honor of an American Icon and the definitive "Man in Black", Mr. Johnny Cash. I loved his music, his sense of style and his never flagging set of iron clad principles. We need more folks like him. I take my hat off to a great man.

( of course, I have more black in my closet than anything else anyway.)
