I just hate soulless music!

I tentatively agree. The only reason I hesitate is because of the inherent subjectivity of what constitutes 'soul'. To a 15 year old girl, Jessica Simpson is singing to her ownheart, telling her own life story. To me, it's off-key and incredibly plastic. To most, listening to Coltrane's "Ascension" album will have them scratching their heads. Meanwhile, I will be trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

I have so many favorites that, when played for others, earn me a "What the fuck is that?" look. Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Yo Yo Ma's Bach Quartets for Cello.... You know what I'm talking about. I've actually grown to enjoy 'the look'. ;-)

The only kind of music which I can honestly say does nothing for me is the whole dance-jungle-house-beat whateveryoucallit style where it's basically a pulse with some decoration around it. I can't hear the 'soul' in it. At all. Perhaps I haven't heard the right artist yet.

BTW, I love this thread. Keep it up!

Music must have passion and soul. That is what makes art.

I'm not so picky about 'soul'. A bit of mindless fluff can be fine from time to time. I like a few oldies that were absolute bubble gum just because they're fun. Afternoon Delight and Oh Mickey, for example, are severely bankrupt in the soul department, but they're fun to sing along with nonetheless.

True, but still, I don't know if most people want art or not. All I know is that the relative power of a producer has a correlation with the amount of passion in their artists of about -.9, as much as one can quantify these things.

Truly, these things are hard to quantify. I love music that is passionate, personal, introspective....shit like that. The whole Britney Spears genre gives me the willies. Most artists who write their own music and play their own instruments will get a fair hearing from me, but the "dancing bears" are an offense to everything I hold dear. I want art! Entertainment can be had from tv!

Same here. And I might get some nasty glares and scowls for this, but to add that list of soulless music would have to Kurt Cobaine and Nirvana. Sorry, that's just one of the few '90s bands I never really got into.

My musical tastes are all over the place. I do not like rap, and 'real' country, and improvisational jazz, and what I'll call 'death' metal, but that's about it.

Brittany and Jessica don't count since it isn't music at all! :D

In general, I like 'rock' in all its various incarnations, and lots of 'pop' stuff too like OutKast's "Hey Yeah". I'll listen to Pearl Jam, Shania Twain, Green Day, and Avril Levine; U2, Springsteen, Santana, Everlast, and 'oldies' like the Eagles and Doobies.

It really comes down to the song itself. I've loved a song by an artist, and hated the next single from the same artist.

Eclectic only begins to describe my tastes!

Lapdog: Brittany, a singer? Nah, I don't think so.

I am in the midst of finals [quarter system] and probably studying more and harder than I ever have....so I have "borrowed" a CD with a lot of Eric Satie to calm the frazzled me.

There may be a type of music that I don't like...I just haven't found it yet.

I have no problem with fluff music if that is what it is intended to be. I still can't hear Hanson's 'Mmm-Bop' without singing along. It's a pointless song that puts me in a good mood. I'm sure when they were writing it they didn't believe it would be the next 'Imagine' or anything. I just dislike music that is fluff but tries to come across as art. Of course a lot of that has to do with the modern ear/listener. For instance take The Bangles 'Eternal Flame.' Now back in the day that was an emotional song that was heard at proms around the entire US. Nowadays it's just a pretty ballad. Okay so perhaps that's not the best analogy and I wasn't eloquent enough but you get the picture (I hope). I think I just made an ass of myself. Well it wouldn't be the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last! :D

That's a horse of a different colour, and I agree completely. Fluff for fluff's sake is cool, whereas a singer who wants to be an artist had better know a thing or two about art. How can someone who has never experienced love sing convincingly about heartache?

Nikki, what about:
Dieselboy, DJ Shadow, DJ Keoki, Tiesto, RJD2, Death In Vegas?
:p

I tried to get into Boards of Canada, but I didn't, maybe I was listening to the wrong songs, I dunno.

But thanks for mentioning Roni Size, I don't have any of him on my new computer yet.

I've been listening to Motorhead left and right. The albums Ace of Spades, Bastards, Overnight Sensation, Sacrifice and Inferno are all fine fine records with nary a dull spot.

Show tune of course! :D
I also listen to classical, eazy listening, instrumental religious (orchestra, organ and/or piano), country (both new and some old), oldies of the 50's, 60's and 70's.
NO RAP, NO BRITNEY, NO JESSICA, NO JANET, NO BACKSTREET BOYS and by all means, darling, NO MICHAEL (as in Jackson)!
