Yeah, everyone says they hurt. My BF has one slightly above the pubic bone, and he's convinced me to get one in the same place.

Why chewing gum?

So you don't grind your teeth into powder.

It will feel similar to an insect sting, only lots of them. It will hurt worse on less fleshy areas of your body (ankle, fingers, anyplace where the needle is near the bone). Mine is on the small of my back and didn't hurt too badly until the needle hit the spinal column. That's when I started clenching my teeth.

It's not that bad. Ask the BF to hold your hand.

Ew, that definitely sounds painful. Yes, and I'm trying to avoid all the "boney" areas, but those are the cooler places:tongue:. Speaking of 'cool', the coolest tattoo I've ever seen was a sword that took up the entire back of a woman's leg and behind the knee-cap was a bleeding heart. Therefore, every time she walked (or moved her leg) it gave the appearance that the sword was piercing the heart.

Kudos, to motherfuckin' her.

I would, but I'm afraid he's no help. You see, that is, I made the very foolish mistake of inquiring how it felt "to get a tattoo", whereupon he brandished a sewing-needle and gave me a quick jab in the arm. Yes, very much like the stinging insects you mentioned. lol

I'm contemplating a break-up.

Try getting one on your chest if you're a slim built male.
When that needle hit my breast bone, I thought I saw God.
I should have had a few wobbly pops before hand.
Oh well, live and learn.:biggrin1:

i dont post here often... but i actually had something to say on this.

i have a partial sleeve on my right arm and one on the tricept of my left arm. the parital sleeve took about 7 hours total. the only time it ever really started to hurt was after about 2 1/2 hours of sitting. and always about 20 mins after we would break for a cigarette. i did it in 3 sessions. so if you can avoid taking breaks the better off you'll be.

i asked the girl who was tattooing me where it really hurts to get tattooed and she told me that the side of the ribs is the absolute worst, the chest, and the back/inner parts of the upper arms where its softer tissue.

i really enjoyed my experiences getting tattoos. the pain brings on adrenaline and kinda makes you feel alive. or maybe im just strange.

Actually.. :T Y'know,...

I'm sorry for sounding so bitter. I've a big weird pink birthmark on my back right above my ass. It's what you'd call a port wine stain, I guess. It's about the size of two fists. That whole sexy little tattoo above my ass thing will never be an option for me, but I do plan on getting a tattoo over it someday. It really is ugly and I wouldn't wear a swim suit in front of people for a long time because of it. It's only been this past year that I've gone in public with a bikini on...heh

As for what I should get over my birthmark, I've no idea. The thing's shaped so oddly.

Growing up, I had a friend with a "port wine" birthmark, but his covered most of the left side of his face. He and I where good friends for years, and I recall that he got a lot of grief over it in grade and middle school.

He learned to deal with it, and be proud of it, because it made him unique, hope you can do the same with yours!

He's only preparing you for the worst. Make sure they explain the procedure to you and ask for a tour of the facility. If they won't do either, leave. Pain is one thing, Hepatitis is another.

And please, please, please don't ink his name onto your skin. It's the kiss of death for relationships.

They tell you not to drink alcohol at least 24 hours before but that's exactly when you need the bottle in your hand. :biggrin1:

Re: over the spine.......

When I was getting that part of the jaguar...had I thought of it, I'd have turned my head and asked "How's that spinal tap coming along back there ?"

Actually the one on my upper arm didn't hurt so bad. It was about like a cat scratching you, but if you can endure the pain when a dentist works your teeth a little too hard, you should be able to endure that too. I'ts less painful, but more discomfortable. On the other hand, the one on my lower abs was painful. I had it split to three sessions, one for the outlining, two for the actual coloring, but it still hurt a lot. I guess one more session I wouldn't have sustained. If I ever get another one, I will pick a less sensitive skin area for it.

The upper arm is a little more fleshy; i'm not surprised it wasn't as painful. As i mentioned before, mine didn't really hurt that much until he hit my spinal column. The artist asked me if I wanted to take breaks but I said no. I wanted to get it over with sooner rather than later. I want to go back and have my outlined in white for a more 3-D effect. Meant to do it this summer but...

I chose my lower back region for mine so that it could be hidden or revealed depending on my dress. Silly me didn't factor in that I have a long torso and most shirts and sweaters aren't long enough for me anyway, so when I bend over everyone sees my tat anyway. Then they ask "what's that say" and i'm forced to explain an archaic latin term which will bore them to tears. :biggrin1: I now understand why people get Daffy Duck stamped on their ass. No explanation needed.

Ha! Definitely. I'm so anal in real life I think that type of action is only normal on my part.

LOL ... noooo way. I've never, ever understood why people do that.

So, what does it say? :)

I think if I had again the choice to pick a tattoo, I don't think I'd make the same decisions again. Maybe I'd have something on my thigh, more sexual allusion too, maybe, and definitely smaller. But those were the days when I was younger, and when I had the one on my lower abs, I wasn't really sane I think. It was a quick decision because I liked the motive when it was on a sheet of paper at the store, it doesn't have the same effects on my relatively tan skin as it has them on the white paper.

Succus Lunariae. It's an old alchemy term Jung used in dream analysis to describe how water represents emotion. I have lots of water dreams, hence the tattoo.

I thought about this one for four years before allowing the needle to penetrate my skin. Honestly, I don't see the point in getting inked unless the tat is meaningful in some way, but obviously that's my opinion.

Mine shows all too well on my fair skin. :biggrin1: I've noticed lighter, brighter colours are best on darker skin. Maybe you can brighten your current ones with a little more colour?

What does Jung say about someone who hardly ever has dreams? Any latin sayings about these, too?

I certainly can't blame it on my lack of experience or age, since I was 28 or 31 for the first or second tattoo, but I didn't give it much background thinking. I just liked the design, so when I went to the store and snooped through the artist's collection, I almost instantly liked these two. More a decision of minutes, less one of years. Also, he didn't exactly inform me or advise me about the color effects that depend on the complexion. I haven't been much fairer skinned in those days. However, you're right. Maybe it's time to get the colors freshened up a bit.
