hey guy....homes under renovations are prime targets...lots of people know tools are there...you most likely know the thieves....keep ears open...good luck on recovery of items...not likely...small losses are best not reported to your ins company...under 1000 eat it....if tools were work items not covered most likely...sorry about your luck.

I love target practice. If you're serious about getting a gun, my colleague and I were talking about doing this today and maybe we can all go to the shooting range together...
I feel like getting an AK47. How much target practice do you need if one gets a machine gun?

Oh, and the burglars took my gun.
I was thinking it would be a bad juju to sleep in a house where you killed someone. The person who robbed my house seems like he was a junkie or alcoholic because they took half empty bottles of 10 year old liquor. What a sad sad world huh.

As a child of a cop those sound like very odd items to steal unless you knew you could sell them to someone at a profit to someone who really needed them.

They easily can get cash for used CD's and DVD at places like Rasputin's, a used record store. I'm pretty sure lots of their used CD's and DVD's are stolen. Easy cash for house robbing drug addicts and junkies.

Tools like compressors, power tools, quality hand tools and carpentry tools are hot items and always being sold at flea markets because new they are expensive and there is such a big demand for them among unscupulous contractors and unskilled laborers.

Did you have insurance?

I do but I don't think I'm gonna make a claim because I think the relatively small value of the stuff that was stolen won't be worth the increase in premiums or worse cancelation of my policy.

What a sick sad world this is turning into, when you have to make that kind of decision.

I never realized just how many low lifes live among us.

I guess it could be worse. I could live in Mexico or any other third world country (which the US is rapidly becoming) and have to build a wall around my house with broken glass bottles jutting off the top. I guess we already have that - it's called a "gated" community.

Sorry to hear that this happened to you. I often fear that it may happen to me while I am away on vacation. There's not too much you can do to prevent it, if someone wants to break in they will.

Earlogjam-o-rama:

Getting burgled is not pleasant. At least you did not find a fresh pile of crap on your dining room table or coffee table. Something that tends to happen with more frequency than we'd like to know about is that burglars often leave you "a little gift" somewhere obvious as sort of a monument to their breaking and entering.

Good luck. Hope it doesn't happen again.

That gives new meaning to the phrase "Shit happens". What do they use as toilet paper pray tell?

Well, a burglar alarm will prevent burglaries, so will neighbors that will call the cops when they see something unusual going down.

You should know all your neighbors well enough so you can check up on each other's place when you are gone, bring the papers in, close the gate if its open, call the cops if they see a moving truck in your driveway..etc.

Bwaaahaahahahahah....

God, I hope to hell that isn't a urban legend ....its just gotta be true. I can definitely see that happening in Jamaica. Ya Man Irie.

The version I heard orginated during a home burglary in Liverpool or Manchester but the story is equally disturbing wherever the locale...

We were robbed back when I was 15, Old man was overseas and I was home staying with his gf at the time. There were 2 guys we found out later on. I chased one guy down (track and cross country) and broke his arm (wrestling) thats when the cops finally came barelling around the corner. I got charged lol, later they were dropped. He doesnt rob anyone anymore with his right arm, its snapped at the joint and even if he does, its crooked haha.

Earl man, I'm horribly sorry this happened to you. It's a tremendous violation of personal space and can leave us feeling vulnerable. My apartment was burgled once. It's more horrible than anyone who hasn't gone through it can imagine. Between this, the cars, and the mugging I don't know how you keep it together. I hope the new house is in a better location. You don't deserve this shit.

I think if all those crimes happened to me in a month I'd be a basket case but spread out between 25 years it's not so bad - just goes with the territory of urban living. The house is actually in a nice neighborhood. I have a suspicion that it was an inside job or the house was being cased. The house alarm is now on.

Thanks for your well wishes.

I'm sorry to read about your burglary, Earl, but glad to know you weren't at home. That's what happened to me last I was burglarised. Sound asleep while the douchebag was rifling through my wallet and papers. As a result I am now the proud owner of a dog who sounds much larger than she is when she barks.

Earl, sorry to hear it.....that's a real bummer! I know how it feels, and I don't think I
have ever felt so helpless and so violated as I did then!

When I first moved to NYC I was robbed before I had even finished unpacking all the boxes. I had only been in the apartment for about 4 days. And, it happened on my birthday!!!

the apartment was in an old pre-WWII building and my living room opened through french doors onto a large terrace, which had a fire escape attached. Not that secure,
but I never considered I would have problems in my neighborhood since there was a
NYPD station in the same block. But, did they come in the fairly easy way off the fire escape and terrace? No, they used a crowbar and pulled the entire metal door frame
in the hallway, including door, out of the wall, placed them both next to the "hole" in the
wall and entered that way.

There was nothing left when I came home after work....all unpacked boxes, furniture,
some money in a dresser, bed, all my clothes, telephone (just installed the day before), TV, all kitchen appliances (not mine), and even my toothbrush, toothpaste, and razor!
All I had left were the clothes on my back....not even a change of underwear!

When I called the police, they were busy with a nearby murder that evening and didn't get there until the next day. They asked for a "list" of everything that had been taken,
......yeah, sure, like you know immediately what is missing! It took me 3 days to make
a list, and I still thought of additional things missing years later!

My insurance company paid me only $500 (the minimum) because I couldn't "prove what I lost, had no photos or property lists, when I bought things and their present value." Of course all my records were gone too. State Farm Insurance sucks!

I hope you find your stuff, and the guys are found. Were the DVDs some HOT ones!
 Bummer!

I am sorry this happened to you. It is going to take a long time for you to feel secure in the house. I hope they catch them. I was mugged once on vacation. The creep tried to strangle me with my seat belt harness. I fought him off. He gave up and ran. I own 3 guns, all gifts. If I ever catch somebody breaking into my apartment, they are going to clean or die.

Wow, scary. I wouldn't know what to do if someone broke into my house. Was the burglar on drugs? - surely he must have known you were home.
I have a dog too but he's not much of a guard dog. I think I'd be protecting HIM if a burglar broke into the house.

That's rough silver. It must have been traumatic to say the least to be in NYC with nothing but the shirt on your back. I suppose you still had your health too.

I'm not too attached to the material stuff I have so I can't say it's too traumatic for me as most of that stuff can be replaced. I can't say I miss my collection of old movie DVD's too much as I rarely ever watched them. lol. I suppose I can always get a Netflix subscription.

Nah, the house was being renovated. I wasn't living there at the time so it's not too traumatic. I seriously doubt that they will find the robbers, though.

I doubt you will be able to live in your apartment with any peace of mind if you kill someone during a robbery - better to just get a dog.

They took a crowbar to the rear window and pried it open, broke the latch and climbed in. My CD/DVD collection and an air compressor were the main things taken. The scumbags helped themselves to the liquor cabinet while robbing the house. They rifled though my files and belongings looking for anything of value.

Happened to me once. Except that I left the door to my apartment standing open, as weird as that sounds. So no forced entry. Got my porn stash, my liquor cabinet, about $5 in loose change and a screwdriver, of all things. Nothing else. Not the laptop, not the TV, not the stereo, not the desktop, not the stack of Krugerands on the coffee table...

Okay, the part about the Krugerands I made up. The rest is true.
Damndest thing. I figure it must have been a couple of kids. Went on about my business, tried not to think about it too hard, and moved as soon as I could.
