Due to the obvious inflammatory nature of that "other thread" regarding the NAACP and its recent comments against the Tea Party, I decided to create a separate thread in an attempt to spark a REAL conversation and without the usual flame bait.

This very topic was discussed on MSNBC this evening by Professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a well known Associate Professor of Politics and African American Studies at Princeton University. She brings a very interesting perspective on the subject matter, explaining how a lot of the problems surrounding the debate could be fueled by a real lack of information regarding what it is to be a racist or to recognize statements that are racial in nature. Here's the interview from Keith Olbermann - NAACP calls out Tea Party for its

Thoughts?

okay, I have read carefully the article and it says she addressed the NAACP, but she did not speak about the Tea Party or the org's position on it at all. Her speech was about childhood obesity. Why they bundled that with a lot of position posturing on Tea party-- that I do not understand.

I just finished reading it myself. For the sake of this thread, I removed the first link since it has no relevance to the story I saw earlier on MSNBC.

Can somebody find something in print that demonstrates that the Tea Party is pro-racism?

More whining by the NAACP. A couple loons that show up at tea parties are racist - that does not dictate the objectives of the movement. It is impossible to screen people that show up for an event.

If somebody can find a written item documenting that the values that are being promoted by the Tea Party can be reasonably interpreted as racist I would be interested in seeing it.

Saying the tea party is not racist is like like showing a pic of a large breasted woman and stating you're 100% straight; some things are probably not true. It is most unfortunate that there is crying over having a black president.

Spoken like a man who intentionally lays a blind eye to the obvious. such as the images of Tea Party protesters and other assorted conservatives coming to rallies with signs advocating the lynching of Democratic party leaders, or portraying the President as an African witch doctor? Or maybe it was those blatantly racist e-mails lately like those portraying the white house lawn covered in watermelons, or once again with the witch doctor imagery, or likening Michelle Obama to an ape, or picturing the President as a pair of "spook eyes" against a black background?

And the best you can do is call the NAACP a bunch of whiners and start a thread about how the tanning tax unfairly targets white people as if only Caucasians tan? Seriously, you don't want to walk down this path and I'd advise you to shut up while you can. Hate the president all you wish, but don't you dare downplay the obvious just for your shallow political ideologies. How socially ignorant of you.

He's mixed race. Brought up by whites,& for a few years, an Indonesian.

I can't understand why the US perpetuates that 1 drop of blood bollocks. It's like Hitler with the Jewish.

The NAACP approves of Louis Farrakhan, who is a racist & an anti-semite - so it's horses for courses really isn't it? Any organisation has a wide spectrum of views amongst its membership

still waiting for an official, published statement or objective from the Tea Party that can be construed as racism.

not a comment from a blogger

not a sign written by a fool that tags along at a Tea Party event

not a sound byte captured by a liberal protagonist against an uneducated simpleton from Alabama walking home from a Tea party event

not photo-shopped signs from Tea Parties that you find on the internet.

Find me an official Tea Party statement or objective which demonstrates racism.

Well said, houtx48... however, I think I can improve your statement by adding one word:

It is most unfortunate that there is STILL crying over having a black president.

And the Jew-hating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

How about your own racism there, starinvestor... is that proof?
