To me, the best has been Charlottesville, Va (home to UVA) because the campus is friggin beautiful and the town and the school have a great symbiotic relationship. I'd put it ahead of the more remote college towns like Blacksburg (Va Tech) and State College (Penn St) because its still within easy driving range of major cities like DC and Richmond, but has enough going on that you don't want to get out of town all the time.
I visited Charlottesville once. It looked like a neat town. I toured Monticello and walked around the UVA campus. I picked up a bottle of Sangiovese wine made on the Monticello grounds (unfortunately, it was horrible, thick, with a taste that I imagine mud would have). I didn't spend enough time there to really get to know the area, but it looks like it has potential. If only for the fact that I could visit Jefferson's grave any time I wanted to.
Of course: Daytona Beach, the town of ERAU (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University).
Great Partying, great beach, a lot of things to divert your attention, even if you are an ROTC cadet. And even if you're none, you should find your fun there.
That is down where my school is, Arliss. I loved it. Do you ever go to John's Pizza? I used to love their stone oven and hokey pictures of celbrities on the walls. I would go with a gay friend and his partner and my cousin. I am sure they probably thought we were two matched sets! LOL!
