The Brits here need to help me out, but if I remember correctly they are related to the royals of Spain. They've got a lot of inbreeding, but I don't think that they are purely Northern European.

They are very nearly purely Northern European. Mostly German rather than English, but Northern European nonetheless.

you can't really differentiate now between royal families in europe - they've all been marrying each other for 2,000 years, from norway to spain to russia. you won't find a single member of any royal family who can't trace their descent from pretty much every friggin country in europe.

don't mind chimeratx, we know by now that he has some pretty fucked-up ideas about race and ethnicity in general. it confuses the discussion further when he devises his own, uh, "original" definitions for established terminology too :eyes:

I think it is all relative

I'm of 100% italian heritige - but i live in Australia.

I look italian (even with my pants on) so most people i meet in australia take one look at me and think of me as an italian boy.
But if I were to go to Italy, my australian accent and mannerisms would have me labelled as an 'Australiano'.

As long as we get treated with respect i dont think we should care what we are labelled.

The royal family is just that: royal. I wouldn't apply the same standard to them as I would the average Englishman. AFAIK, they only have ancestry from Northwestern European countries though.

Opps! Prince Phillip the father of the heir to the throne of the United Kingdom is from Greece. That means Prince Charles is one/half Greek. Even if somehow the throne goes directly to Wills, Wills is one fourth Greek.

As far as I know, Queen Elizabeth II has some close family ties with the house of Hannover in Germany. I think George VII or one of the 20th century George's was actually pretty much a german guy.

And as for the other question, I tend to confuse citizenship with nationality. When asked about my citizenship, I say canadian cause that's the pasaport I have. When asked about my nationality, I would pretty much answer the same because Canada is the country I was born and raised in, regardless of my genes, which are one half quebecker (which is a mix anyway, and not quite the same as french canadian) and one half german. I think answering the question about nationaliy just pretty much means which country you're from, and not where your parents and grand-parents are from.

Finally, I view America as a continent and frequently refer to my home as being in America, not seeing any major difference between Canada and the US. I mean there obviously ARE, coming from Québec, I would know this but not enough to justify making the difference on more general questions. And I don't agree with saying american when meaning US-citizen. The problem is, you can make any decent adjecitive for 'United States of America" in the english language. There is a neologism in french which is slowly catching on which is roughly 'united-stater' (étasunien) and in german 'US-american'.

Prince Charles's father is the Duke of Edinburgh, who was formerly Prince Philip of Greece. However, the Greek royal family is not of Greek blood. Philip's father, Andrew of Greece was of Oldenburg blood, which was a Danish noble family, and Philip's mother was Alice of Battenberg, who was German. There is some Russian noble blood intermarried with the Oldenburg's, but as far as I know, the only Oldenburg who married a Greek was Marie of Greece, and she was not an ancestress of Philip.

The connexion with the Spanish royal family is similar: King Juan Carlos's queen is Sofia, the daughter of Paul I of Greece, who was also an Oldenburg. Her mother was Frederica of Hanover, who was, of course, German.

To say that Elizabeth II has ties with the Hanovers is an understatement: she is a direct descendant of the Hanover royal family of England. The name of the royal family was changed from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor during WWI to veil the German heritage, and Edward VII Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. You can't get much more German than that!

Ashenkazi Jews are almost entirely descended from Armenian-converts. Ashenkazi groups have remained very homogenous over time, so there are physical traits commonly found in Ashenkazi.

The most commonly attributed traits are: brachycephaly, prominent/convex nose, deep fossa canina, well-definined nasiolabial folds, an everted lower lip, receding chin, hypsicephaly, and oblique eye axses.

This look is very common with Ashenkazi in America, so there is indeed a Jewish "look".

I am Ashkenazi and have never heard this before. Doesn't mean I doubt you, just that it's new to me because Ashkenazi, to me, means Jews from eastern and northern Europe (as opposed to Sephardim who are from Mediterranean and north African countries). Due to the alleged common traits it definitely makes Judaism seem more like an ethnic group than any other religion.

I'm fascinated by all this.

U.S.A. American as opposed to the other Americans in the Western hemisphere. Third great grandfather came to this country from Ireland and my fifth great grandfather came to this country from Scotland. Only God knows where all the grandmothers were from :grr:

The Ashkenazim are the historically Yiddish-speaking Jews that settled in Northern Europe. The connexion of Judaism with Armenia was with the Sephardic Jews, not the Ashkenazim. Many Sephardim who fled Spain to escape the Inquisition settled in Armenia, especially that part of Armenia in present-day Turkey. Many of the Sephardim formerly had Spanish, Portuguese, and even Arabic surnames, but after they were dispersed by the Spanish Inquisition, many adopted Hebrew last names.

When it comes to Jews, every fringe nut has their theory about this group of Jews or that group of Jews. Which is itself amazing since, in ancient times, the Jews were so minor to the history of the region. All I know is, the lost tribes didn't visit North America.
