I'm a Northern New England variation on a Swamp Yankee, though neither of my grandmothers would have approved of the term
My paternal grandmother preferred the term "Gentleman Farmer" and traced her lineage on both sides back to the 17th century from English stock (though from where, specifically, I haven't a clue). They all seem to have been from New Hampshire until the 1880s, when they gradually moved down to Massachusetts.
With all that we know about her side of the family, we know very little about my paternal grandfather's side, except that my surname is Manx.
My mother's father was French Canadian and my mother's mother's family came from in a small town in central Maine. She always maintained that they were 100% WASP.
