I see you've seen South Park.

That's funny because, Indians who start taking advantage of hunting and fishing rights always get animal rights protestors. Oh, and by "protestors", I mean the same way pro-lifers "protest" abortion clinics.

What's funny is, if a corporation is responsible for killing off the species in question in the process of developing the land which was leased by the BIA without tribal consent, the animal rights people magically disappear.

*sigh* I've mentioned I hate hippies, right?

The NCAA has notified its participants that 18 of its colleges and universities, which have Native American named teams/mascots are no longer eligible for playoffs unless they cover the name/illustrations on their uniforms or change their nicknames altogether.
Whadaya think?

I could care less what the NCAA does or what one of their teams is known as. I know that things like this get the panties of many into a wad. But I could care less than a rat's ass. Let them do what they want as long as it does not affect my personal freedom.

Of course you can do that when one of your universities has the largest college baseball stadium in the country.

I really don't think that the size of a baseball stadium has anything to do with the topic of discussion. I hail from the state of South Kakalina where I would bet that the cock fighting stadiums would dwarf the baseball stadium in Mississippi. Here in Ghawghia, the dog fighting stadiums might even dwarf all of them.

I've got some personal experience with this subject already. Back in high school, we were the Indians. It wasn't meant to be demeaning in any way, and the students were sure to treat the image of our mascot with respect. Also, we didn't have some lame guy in a getup or a blowup suit walking around as our mascot at sporting events. However, by my sophomore year (or about 5-6 years ago) we had ideas floating around about changing our mascots...and then the change was forced on us. After some pointless voting (which a lot of us think was rigged) our new mascot was found to be the Patriots. (Ironically this was pre-9/11).

Now one thing I just have to point out....we went from having a mascot that was demeaning to an entire people........to a mascot that killed thousands/millions of them. Boy we did them a huge favor there.

Anyway, my main vote goes towards allowing these mascots if they are portrayed with respect and permission. That's my vote, and while I'm like 1/16th Native American (probably Lakota) my opinion and the NCAA's shouldn't matter. It's all about who these mascots are representing.

For the record, I am mostly Irish but do not consider the Notre Dame mascot/name to be offensive. And the cartoon guy who sells "Lucky Charms" cereal is ok too.

7x5.5: Pretty Outrageous. I don't see why the Indians have been singled out, if those names must be changed, all team names relating to a culture should be eradicated. I don't see how calling a team the 'Savages' is any more offensive to an Indian then calling a team the 'Raiders' is offensive to one of scandanavian heritage. Either knock them both out, or (as is my opinion) leave them both alone as there really should not be a problem in the first place.

I ended up graduating from a high school who had a football team known as The Warriors. Everything was there including the native American profile replete with some feathers. As far as I know they have managed to somehow keep that as their team name. Meanwhile in another section of town there was a school with the Tomahawks and nobody ever seemed to blink. I suppose it may matter to people of Native heritage and it may be considered improper or politically incorrect, I feel if they want it to be stopped then we should respect that desire although I believe we have shown some level of respect to them by acknowleding them with these team names.

And what next? Why are Pirates okay? Sort of an insult to the seafaring crowd who earn their living robbing other vessels. And what about bears and falcons and panthers? How about the dreadful connotations Dodgers can bring about by making people recall the draft dodgers of the past? And is not Yankee offensive to persons of the south? And what is Notre Dame doing with the fighting Irish? Does this mean all Irish are fighters? There will always be something that somebody won't like.
