Interesting the ones that seem out on their own well away from the main patterns. I guess it's weather or ATC routing but it also makes you wonder if they took a wrong turn somewhere.

It is ATC routing.

Even without the chart underneath, you can almost immediately identify the hubs, LAX, ORD, MSY, SFO, JFK... and see how one after the other flares up as the time preceeds in the morning. An interesting addition might have been a vertical scaling, so you see the preferred altitudes, departures/approaches. Or, the ultimate, 3D-turnable and zoomable overview.

Still pretty cool as a time lapse, tho
