What's the best advice you've been given?

I had an incident at work today where incorrect measurements produced disastrous results. I reminded the responsible party of the old engineer/architect adage "Measure twice, cut once". That has saved me much unnecessary grief over the years.

I work construction in Calif. Mostly high dollar remodels in Palm Springs.

    "Measure twice, cut once".
    Great advise!

The best advise I have ever been given. Is actually a "family saying" I grew up with...... "Don't let fear hold you back"!

It taught me to do and try many things in life. Mostly on my own and quite often with risks.
From Sky diving to Surfing..... and many things in between.

 That's "N" every time he measures in the woodworker's shop! Have you two been in cahoots?:33:

My maternal grandfather was prone to say about his enemies "treat them with silent contempt".

I take after my dad's side.

I used to sit outside my retail store I ran when I was in my early twenties and play my acoustic guitar as the people walked by (store wasn't very busy). One day my friends from the record store next door were with me. A group of about six of us were chilling outside as I was tuning my guitar to an alternate tuning, that required a bit of extra work on my part to achieve. An older "country" feller walked by us and stopped for several seconds and watched me tune my guitar. He then uttered a phrase that my friends and I will NEVER forget, it went something like this:

You have to hear this in your head with a THICK southern accent...

"Set it where you want it and wail!"

This little nugget of wisdom is indispensible!

Do important things first. And if you want them really done, do it yourself.

My Dad always told me to keep my chin up. As simple as it sounds, it's actually helped me stay strong through some very tough situations.

Many people helped me in my life.

    Some good advices i got:

"You are feeling right, that girl is the one for you" (my best friend)

"Whatever you decide to do in your life, think about it and listen to your coscience, then decide on your own. If your decision will be the wrong one, you won't have nobody to blame but you, so next time you will do the right thing" (my parents).

"Sir. Please remove your massive penis from the vending machine."

I must have been given this advice a million times. I'm sure that it has saved my member from being severed at least once, but when the police arrive it feels like too little too late. Then I cheer myself up because jail has good buttseks.

"It's only the government's filthy money"

This said to me by the salesman when signing the papers on my first new car purchase at age 21. It's stuck and it's made me broke at times :biggrin1:

Probably the best advice, came from my mother, long ago---"Never overlook an opportunity to keep your mouth shut". She didn't originate it, I know, but I heard it from her first. And whenever I don't follow that advice, it usually gets me in trouble....

This advice was written above the entrance to the oracle at Delphi.

    Know yourself.

I think it stands the test of time well.

Unfortunately I have never been able to adhere to other ancient advice - all things in moderation.

"The Talk" as given by my father to his younger sister, and then later to me.

"A woman can run faster with her skirt up than a man can with his pants down."
