My office needs to hire a new administrative assistant.

The office manager, a 50 year old woman, can be a bully. She’s been hard on the past three admin assistants we’ve had.

I think what we need is an AA who is a young gay man who wouldnt be intimidated and could throw shade right back at her.

Is there a way I can bias the search without getting sued?

Seems like a lot of that (bullying) is going around . . . . Our office manager, also a woman of a certain age (tm), tends to spank us as much as she can whenever we make a mistake . . . .

Where I work, the project manager is retiring the beginning of the year. Her tenure has been characterized by tyranny, violent mood swings, a supercilious and condescending attitude to her employees, and an Ebenezer Scrooge-like cheapness, to the point of allowing the equipment to literally fall apart so she can get a bigger bonus. We are all counting the days to her retirement....

It is always terrible to be at the mercy of a bad boss. Hoping you find something good soon....

@twoton My wife used to work with a supervisor who was a real Jekyll and Hyde. She would swing wildly from laughing and being jubilant to harsh, strident and murderously angry, all in the span of a few hours! She put up with 11 years of this woman before finally moving to another, better job. Meantime, the Jekyll and Hyde lady has gone through seven subordinates...I think there's a sign there, but can't quite figure it out....

If your office manager has a history of being a bully - get rid of the office manager. Trying to profile a type of person who will take abuse and not complain or quit is foolish. If you got rid of the office manager you would likely not need to keep hiring new AA's. When dealing with a problem, fix the cause, not the results of the cause.

I'm in total agreement with you there.

If I were over the lady, I'd be doing a little investigating as to why the turnover was so high....

Unfortunately, the company in question just didn't give a shit. The same heady mix of incompetence and corruption that runs so many companies and governments.

We live in an age where office sexual politics is interwoven with the dominate national agenda. In many occupations, attempting to stand-up to psychological bullying-- or incompetence-- of a female superior is fraught with peril. Certainly in aviation all female pilots must be treated with unquestionable awe and respect; goddesses of the skies. And while my hat's-off to those relatively few who have followed their dream into the lofty realm of the left seat of a airline jet, in the dark recesses of my mind I'm occasionally worried at the double-standard employed by the airlines. It's common knowledge that unless a female pilot bends an airplane badly and/or the body count reaches a level that can't be ignored, she can be along for the ride until retirement at age 65.

Southwest Airlines captain Tammi Jo Shults has been lauded for her heroism and went on a veritable media tour after she landed a Boeing 737-700NG safely after an engine cowling came apart in-flight. Her status rose to that of captain Sully Sullenberger who landed an A320 on the Hudson river years before. Good for her and you go-girl! But how many people know who was pilot-in-command of Southwest Airlines flight 345 that landed somewhat unceremoniously past the threshold of LaGuardia's runway 4 and skidded tp a stop? Was that person a man, woman, a transexual or Vulcan? Chances are you have no idea. Southwest Airlines and the media don't want you to know either.

The colloquial aviation term is wheel-barrowing. And yes she was fired: Captain Fired After Nose-Wheel Landing
