I like variety with the dildos I buy. I have everything from a 5" insertable length and slim girth to a 7" insertable length and thick. I appreciate excess/extra length as it gives me something to hold onto more easily, as I don't like dildos with "testicles" on them, and not all of them have a base for harness compatibility. This study doesn't surprise me at all, but I think it isn't comprehensive/well rounded, in that it seems to completely leave out or exclude any kind of data for why people chose toys with those dimensions.

I’m with you. Not surprised about the recommended/popular size or the size (index) where issues are reported

Yes. The dildo info is pretty hollow, only weakly supporting the recommendation. It does align with similar studies that seem to indicate a general preference for just above average size penises

Of note is the focus on girth being the more impeding dimension, when in excess. I think length is too often the focus of, dare I say, big dick problems

With dildos, the longer lengths are easier to hold, look better, and probably only weakly represent the actual length desired or needed

It says preferred length is 6.5", which doesn't do much for those "only" 5.x in that dimension ;)
Few dildos actually measure their advertised length. The article doesn't state "preferred length", nor does it mention whether insertable length was actually checked or if they simply went with the product descriptions. And as @Fade already mentioned, you need something to hold onto, so extra length is needed for a toy as opposed to a penis already mounted to a person.

Very true. The one I bought for my wife said it was 8x6 and it turned out to be closer to 9x7. Not so sure about those manufacturing tolerances...

The article is specifically about a very narrowly (no pun) defined issue: 4 transgender patients who reported inability to have penetrative sex due to excessive girth. They seemed to have been given roughly 6" girth neophalluses, and imho it's a bit surprising that they reported inability to penetrate, to the point of requesting revision surgery, but this is why anecdote shouldn't be taken as gospel, universal truth.

I guarantee the LloydBaker's/HarryPalmas' of the world will get zero comfort from this dose of reality.

I've never once seen a dildo measure longer and/or thicker than advertised. What specific toy is this?
I’ll get you a pic when I get home. It isn’t way over what was listed but I was fairly shocked when I saw it.
