To me it has always been the 11th of September, 2001. (9/11 to me is the 9th of November). Thinks - "Still we only gave them their language, how they bastardise it is their business".

Might I suggest Bill Bryson's book, The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way?

Hint: be prepared for the shoe to be on the other foot.

Signed, an avowed American Anglophile who nevertheless finds cunty English people especially annoying.

Dear ROBLON26,

Just a few thoughts and comments on your previous post...

"To me it has always been the 11th of September, 2001. (9/11 to me is the 9th of November). Thinks - "Still we only gave them their language, how they bastardise it is their business"."

Thinks - So, since you "gave" us the language, maybe YOU could actually learn to spell the words...

"In relation to the photos: I thought they were well composed (considering the situation) and helped explain to me how the buildings collapsed. The spread of the dust was a good demonstration of Osmosis."

Umm...thank god you didn't "give" us our education.

Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane.water potential (low solute concentration) to an area of low water potential (high solute concentration). It is a physical process in which a solvent moves, without input of energy, across a semi-permeable membrane (permeable to the solvent, but not the solute) separating two solutions of different concentrations.

"To all of you who are now seething over my above comments - Yes I accept that 3000+ lives ended that day and I feel equally numb about the 2800+ lives that end every year in the UK due to road traffic accidents - equally pointless wastes of life due mostly to lack of attention or arrogance."

It is probably easy for you to "accept" the deaths of MY brothers and sisters that gave their lives or had them taken that day. Because YOU don't have the mental capability to understand any aspect of the situation. You are numb, from the neck up. Your comparison of lives lost in one of the most devastating terrorist ATTACKS in history, to those lost in traffic ACCIDENTS only proves your complete and total ignorance.
You sir, are a fucking moron.

Oh, and you might want to be careful implying the loss of American lives on 9/11 was, in any amount due to arrogance. I mean, you know when any American service members that are from New York might read this. Just a thought...

who the hell are you?

Then why are you here, talking about how we bastardize your language?

By the way he is just criticizing someone for something he considers is in poor taste. And yes, that is adult behavior.

1) Why am I here? Well thanks two the two illegitimate people who got married and conceived me (and also a little help from Mother Nature for providing the minerals and the meteorite/alien lifeform/ imaginary friend - delete as your brain decides) that's why I am here. As for the language - then maybe you do not have much fondness for British humour (this is like American Humor but with an extra U) - let's face it we only have 390 years of ill-feeling between us - compare this with France which we have a thousand year history of non-brotherly love from the cheese eating surrender monkeys (with thanks to Groundskeeper Willie and apologies to my Gallic forebears - but hey I'm British and we love starting wars - although the Yanks seem to have stolen that title of us recently).

2) Yes - people are free to criticise for things they think are in poor taste. This also allows others to respond and also for other points related to it to be raised. I was taught this is called a discussion - otherwise it becomes a diatribe.

So Pendulum - which way will you swing now?

As Vinyl Boy imperiously called the terrorist threat, "nothing more than a few wackos with exacto knives,"

Comical to see somebody post swarmy comments and insults; and consequently when said poster is called on his own comments, he instantaneously goes into a fit of rage and profanity-laden tirades.

Perhaps be more careful with your words, good sir.

Re: your OP: you've been asked to produce the specific VinylBoy post showing "nothing more than a few wackos with exacto knives" starinvestor. As it does not exist, I see why he went on a tirade.

Dear Patronus76,

Thank you for the explanation - I think Bastardise (ize) is acceptable in either form in English.

Thank you also for the explanation of Osmosis - as soon as I read your comment I realised it only happens in water. Would "diffuse" be a more appropriate word for explaining the patterns of the dust?

I say I accept the deaths as I accept any death as a pointless waste of life and a loss of knowledge and love.

In the statement "I feel equally numb about the 2800+ lives that end every year in the UK due to road traffic accidents - equally pointless wastes of life due mostly to lack of attention or arrogance." I am referring to the loss of life due to road traffic accident - these are the deaths caused by arrogance - having seen what is left of a human and car due to arrogant driving it saddens me that people do not change their behaviour.

I hope that explains your assumption about that comment and therefore can you explain why you launched into a verbal attack against me?

So British humor is a poor 9/11 joke? Quip maybe?

I never said you shouldn't have responded, after all I responded to your response of his response. And I'm now responding to your response to my original response. My point was that yes he may have denigrated him a bit as I believe you put it, but I felt it was part of his criticism because they had a private exchange (my understanding) that involved him saying he was better than that, or something along those lines. Add to that the subject matter, which is very sensitive, it is understandable.

and yes, Starinvestor raises a valid point -- one merely has to run through the many posts on this and other boards to find the libs dismissing the deaths of Americans in that incident, as well as any possible future acts by comparing the numbers to numbers of deaths occurring through more banal occurrences, all in an attempt to uphold the postulates and imperatives of their Euro-derived liberal ideology

now, carry on

Lol! Looking back at British history, there is very little we accomplished isnt there? The British poster was a douche, but its posts like that that just increase peoples contempt for Americans. Thankfully, the vast majority of Yanks on here are a bit of alright

As for the OP, i think the new pics could have been presented far more powerfully. I saw them on BBC.COM and i stolled through them a few times as i forgot how sunny and beautiful that day looks in the pictures, and yet, they are some the saddest views ive ever witnessed.

To show how sad the OP was, we arnt here discussing the day and how sad it is, but discussing VB and Star's little back and forth.

What ill always remember about 9/11, is the next day, all the planes seemed alot lower. And im not the only person to say this. Ill always remember watching the bombing of Afgahnistan on Sky news just before dinner with my Nan and family and my Nan reading a statement from the Taleban saying the bomibing were terrorist attacks. "how do they have the nerve to say that? how many people died innocently? i hope we get them all, the bastards!".

That statement from my Nan got me inot world affairs and politics, and ultimately towards my current path at University.

Good or bad, it is evident to me that that day will always be important to me and that it shaped my life.

Okay; hopefully everybody got the screaming/venting out of their systems on this thread.

The scale of the tragedy of 9/11 is perfectly depicted in these photos. Undoubtedly, it is an event that everyone of us will remember vividly for the rest of our lives, and as evidenced by a number of the posts in this thread - it is clear that it is a subject that shakes the soul and elicits strong emotions.

That's a wrap.

Now, excuse me while I go finish pummeling Maxcok in the Sarah Palin thread.

Don't have the time/inclination to fish through thousands of posts. Luckily I have a translucent memory.
