Chapter 1
Jeff lived a pretty dull life in the exurbs. At 44 he had just seen his twins go off to college the previous fall and after 21 years of marriage he and his wife were content but a little stale. They had decent jobs that afforded them upper middle class lifestyles but they never really had many adventures or luxuries. He looked forward to an empty nest to enjoy time alone with his wife again. There had always been something with the kids between sports, school, family trips and his expectation was things would go back to “them” when they were on their own.
Things didn’t really change that much. Jeff’s wife Janet was an attractive lady but wasn’t overly interested in sex or much of anything beyond work, coming home and just being alone with the TV or a book. She was the only woman Jeff had ever slept with, having met her in college, losing his virginity at 20, then marrying her a few years later. The twins came only a year after their wedding and everything just happened so fast. Jeff was a good husband and dad but had become bored with his routine.
Their sex life had never been anything exciting but it was fulfilling and consistent for most of their marriage, usually a couple of times a week even when the twins were younger and their lives were busy. He’d hoped for more but lately it had barely been once a month. Janet just said she still loved him and just wasn’t in the mood. Jeff loved her too but had become very frustrated.
Their cul de sac had a new neighbor move in after the house sat strangely vacant for a couple of months. It sold fast enough but there had been some contractors going in and out for a few weeks with no sign of a resident. It was a safe and quiet neighborhood where there was little turnover and everyone were generally family oriented couples and their support network. It was a close knit group and after 12 years in the neighborhood, Jeff and Janet knew everyone around them, including the prior owner who was a widow and was always good to give out Halloween candy to the kids or make a purchase for the school fundraiser.
Jeff was home alone one Saturday when the vans arrived and saw guys carrying in stuff to the home, wondering if this was the day their new neighbor would show up. Later that day he saw a guy around his age with a SUV in the driveway carrying some things inside. Jeff decided he would hop over and say hello as Janet was just reading and not really engaged with anything beyond her book.
“Hello there. Nice to meet you man, I’m Jeff. We live just across the way” as he gestured towards his house.
“Good afternoon! I’m Tim. Good to meet you Jeff” was the reply as the guy stuck out his hand and they shook.
“Need a hand?” “Actually I’m just about finished with this load and I think that will be all for today. I’m done,” replied Tim with a laugh.
“Yeah moving can wipe a guy out for sure. Don’t want to trouble you, just wanted to say hello and let you know if you need anything just give us a knock.”
“Thank you Jeff. I may take you up on it sometime” was Tim’s quick reply. It was abrupt but not rude. Jeff let it go and left, happy that a new neighbor who was relatively close to his age was around.
