In the golden 100 days, before the next election campaign takes over everything, what can Obama do?

What is going to happen about the budget? Should Obama accept inevitable republican obstructionism, or should he take a stand (maybe democrat obstructionism too, dont want to be partisan here.)

I guess the republicans were hoping for a win so they could run their own policies, and so were stalling throughout the end of the last presidency. The budget question was put off. Now they may have to choose. Are we going to get selective tax rises? Service cuts? Deficit increases or reductions?

In the Uk at this point we would have a good idea what was about to happen. In the US....I have no idea. We europeans have argued a lot about deadlock in the european union, but it is the same in the US. Will anyone be willing to stand up for what they believe now?

The Chinese government will stand up for what it thinks is right for China's agenda. All bets are off for the western world.

What does that actually mean though ?

Is it causing you a problem that China's billion people have some say in the world now ?

Well, the US economy may be on the verge of taking off, so it will be interesting. :)

Good luck, Obama! :)

The absolute truth is that nobody knows yet what is going to happen. Traditionally most Presidents are more effective in their second term because they don't have to then worry about reelection because of the "lame duck" status. At this point in time the best move on the part of the GOP would be to "clean house" and get their own ducks in order. If they clean out the most extreme elements within their party and begin to seriously look at candidates that are more centrist in political ideology then they will easily begin to win elections. I have traditionally voted based not on party but based on candidate. If the GOP were to give me a good candidate then that person would deserve my consideration just as much as a Democrat would under the same circumstances. They continue to back extremists and they continue to lose no matter how negative their advertising gets simply because many of the candidates they have fielded in the past few elections have been "hair-do's" and "empty shirts" with zero ability to actually keep the extremist promises they make to extremely small but vocal minorities within their own party. They are beginning to lose the point and that point is that you work with people and reach common decisions you do not take the "my way or the highway" approach as has been their mantra for some time now. This attitude and complete obstructionism is costing them seats.

The fact that Paul Ryan hedged his bets with regards to his "old job" said loud and clear to me that even he did not think that they were going to win. Romney sadly in essence threw the election by opening his mouth and uttering the wrong words for the common man.

Maybe next time the GOP will learn from this and do the right thing.

we will NOT fall off the fiscal cliff. Speaker Boner and Obama will have to compromise. Neither one wants to hurt the nation or their political legacy.
the orange Boner got his wake up call yesterday. Obama got his on election day in 2010. Now , they can collaborate with the bruises and bumps brought about by the exhausting political campaign. it should be interesting to watch. stay tuned !!!

our rights, and property. and we'll give it to them willingly for their shitty fake ever inflating fiat currency.

Yeah, and midnight last night while the President was giving his acceptance speech... I got a knock on my door. Turns out there were two guys in black suits and black ties, and black shoes... they told me, now that the President was re-elected, I had to turn over my guns.:wave::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::011::011::011::011::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::18::18::fingersx::fingersx::eek5::eek5::beerchug2::beerchug2::rocketwhore::rocketwhore::banana::banana::banana::hail::hail:

Definitely not a revolutionary leader, but now we get to watch the Democrats and Republicans fight over an annual tax increase equal to about .02 percent of the total expenditures for the last fiscal year. This could get a little ridiculous...

So you shot them?

They may indeed end up arguing over tiny amounts but the news I saw says the automatic measures amount to something like 5% of GDP? This is instant recession next year.

Obama and the House, neither backs down
- automatic measures come into play on Jan 1st
- cuts to state funded programmes
- cuts to tax allowable deductions
- taxes back up to pre Dubya times
- economy dips
- a few more unemployed
- Obama proposes introduction of tax cuts for those earning under $100,000
- Republicans concede in face of public pressure
- 6 months of negative growth
- meanwhile higher taxes and cuts = a halving of the deficit
- end result US economy back on course
- more equitable tax system
- GOP realise they've lost all cred

Well the automatic measures are actual reforms. Unlike the small $70 billion sum I was referring to.

A lot of discussion on how taxes will rise and that will sort itself out. What about the other side of the equation, the expenditure programs which are to be cut?

There will be some cuts. I expect much of it, will be about cutting the military, closing loopholes, and probably going after ex-Congress people who become lobbyists. And par down the perks the Congress gets during and after they stop being Congress people. Probably many more cuts will take place. Some social cuts I'm sure, but not all the Conservatives want. We already know, that austerity doesn't work. Ask, Greece, Italy, and many other countries who adopted that tact. Those people are suffering, and protesting. Austerity isn't the answer. It's the World Wide Conservative movement, that brought this country and every other Free Country, to it's knees with no more new taxes. When its the taxes that help people, rich or poor.

A few things I'd like to see happen;

Close all the tax loopholes

Give business an incentive to bring jobs back from over seas

Raise taxes - not my favorite thing to hear but probably going to have to happen

Bring our troops back home, let others fight their own civil wars

Close some of our military bases over seas, really why do we need so many in this day and age?

Secure our border, I'd rather pay our military for this than fighting someone else's wars for them.

Cut off all foreign aid. This may sound harsh but why must we be the worlds keeper? We need to get our house back in order first before we can save the rest of the world or we're going to be joining them.

We had programs back during the depression, the CCC's and the WPA that built schools, roads, state parks and such. My grandfather was one of those workers who built several roads the hard way back in the day. Our infastructure is in a mess, why can't we have a similar progam like that now?
