New Years Eve, Overrated

I've always felt of all the holidays and/or events of the year New Years Eve was always the biggest let down. The "magic" of the night never develops like it does in the movies when you're young and when you get older and/or have kids it becomes more of a struggle to just stay up until 12a.

Agree or disagree?

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sunrise.

So wrote eighteenth century poet William Blake. In modern psychobabble maybe lower your expectations a bit? A lot?

Or not. I've had my share of quiet New Year's Eves. Either way, Happy New Year!

Holy fuck! I love how this thread goes straight from a light enquiry soliciting opinions about New Year's Eve being overrated ---> quoting eighteenth century poet William Blake! ------> ....classic lpsg one liner. It was like a roller coaster that peaks in the middle.

You know how at the end it's always like.... ok the fun's slowing down now.....and when you have balls in hand, the fun never ends. Happy New Year's, tangential gentlemen :party:

Umm even when I was young and in my teens I always felt NYE was unnecessarily stressful I always had this one friend who would plan everything for us and then freak out when it came to the night off, only to begged into participating into his own plans. I can’t tell you how many NYEs I’ve spent in the backseat of a car on the way to a Party

Overrated.

Although I think it's cute how some people use it as an excuse to make life changing "resolutions" that are usually forgotten the very next day. If you're gonna make a change in your life for the better, there's 364 other days you can start as well.

Holidays in general are overrated.

I can't remember the last time I "celebrated" NYE. We just like to make sure we get a good fuck in because it's our sexiversarry. Other than that we don't do fuck all for the new year. Just another day to me.

I joke about how 2020 needs to be better than this year or I'll kick the universe's ass. None of it is ever sincere. Things aren't going to change just because the planet we exist upon orbited the sun again.

When I was growing up I lived in an outer suburb of Brisbane...when it clicked over you could hear in the distance all the barges and ships on the river blow their horns.........then again, that's when the City Hall was the tallest building and noise would travel further...and where I grew up is now an inner suburb.

Just one of those happy childhood memories that come back at this time. A happy 2020 to you and hope you see many more.

I'm usually celebrating the end of the closing year, and saying fuck off/goodbye to everything that tried to kick my ass.

I'm aiming to be a bit more, ummm, hopeful this year.

Currently idling on "meh" and "can we please start drinking?"

Can't be a let down if you never think much of it to begin with. *Puts finger to my head*

I don't know, new years has never been a real thing with me. And i blame christmas. Or more specifically all the people who used to and who do make christmas out to be the only time of year where people can be good to each other. As a kid i used to love christmas. Not just because of the presents (i'd be lying if i said it wasn't also about that) but because of the togetherness. People enjoy each other's company. Even bringing in members of the family or so on who the rest of the year they shunned. And then it changed. And i saw it change. And was one of the only people willing to openly note the change.

Christmas has always overshadowed new years for me. To me new years was when people got drunk and died (or murdered someone else) trying to get from point a to point b. Or screwed their lives up over doing something else stupid. After christmas changed new years for me just got worse. Instead of being the thing everyone went to to do stupid stuff and was the day everyone did stupid stuff on. I started noticing that it wasn't just on new years.

That most holidays people do stupid stuff. That holidays were in general people's excuse to ignore others the rest of the year and be massive assholes for no logical reason. You'd think by me thinking all that that i wouldn't be awesome at parties. Well you'd be fucking wrong son! :p

Just not during holidays. :)

I like saying goodbye to the old year. However, it’s totally low-key for me. Gave up partying years ago. Have a nice meal (not turkey!), hang out with family and see if I can stay awake til midnight.

It's nice to get a message from people, if by phone, who actually mention your name in the text........the blanket ones just don't carry any, genuine wish.

Happy New Year Wondergal....see you've been promoted. You'd look pretty good with those extra stripes :) :)

I agree. Getting (personal) well wishes from friends and family is very nice.

Thanks for the compliment on my new stripes!

I typically call it “amateur night” as far as going out applies.
I’ll go to a jamband show, or a psychedelic trip, but not just to a bar.

I seek meaningful over the party. I might be a wet blanket.

I was sick last night, so my sweetie and I just talked on the phone. last year, he was driving home through a blizzard, with a wrecked car, and we stayed on the phone talking as I checked road conditions and snow accumulations and road camera ahead of him. 13 hour call, in two pieces, with 30 min for him to recharge his earpiece.
The year before, he’d gotten bumped from a corporate gig, so we spent the evening in bed.

next year, I’d like to be able to have us someplace warm to celebrate, but we are so busy at this time of year, and you must make hay and retirement savings while the sun shines.
So maybe rolling a proud in bed, and giving him the itinerary for an island trip.

Agree or disagree?

Outside of the "destination event" for New Year's, I think I've done it all..
1. House Party? Check.
1a. Crash a House Party? Check.
2. Catering Hall? Check.
3. Times Square? Check.
4. Local bar? Check.
5. Nothing? Check.

I kind of look forward to the holidays, as I get to see friends and family that I haven't had a chance to see during the year. I no longer have the need to get shit-faced and spend New Year's Day in bed, hungover...

Yes, it doesn't have the same "magic" it did when I was younger, but that's okay. It is what you make of it. So make the best of it.

I don't know how long it's been since I attended a NYE party or gone out on that night. A decade maybe?

(EDIT: Thinking back, my favorite NYE was probably getting to see Herbie Hancock in NYC in the early 90s, which was a lot less about the typical NYE NYC experience and more about getting to see Herbie motherfucking Hancock!)

This year, I took a muscle relaxer and was conked out by 9, and then awakened at midnight by some naked drunk people jumping in the apartment pool (my apartment faces the courtyard and I like to keep my window open). It was like 45 degrees out, I hope they enjoyed that cold ass water  Ah to be in your 20s, drunk, and think jumping in freezing water is a good idea :joy:

For the most part this time of year has usually been about a quiet night at home with family, some good takeout or snacks, maybe some cheap champagne and movies. It's about winding down the 3 week holiday break I get and prepping for the new semester which usually starts like gangbusters.

I typically write down some short term goals as well, but I do that at the start of every month so it doesn't really feel like something specific to the start of the new year.

The last New Year's Eve party I was at was in 1995. I drank so much Goldschlager I had to be carried to the bathroom where I spent half the night genuflecting before the porcelain deity.

To this day the smell of cinnamon mouthwash makes my stomach flip flop.:confounded:

The last time I drank goldschlager I wound up sleeping in a bathtub clutching what was left of the bottle in my hands. :emoji_disappointed_relieved:
