See how easy it is. New Zealand can do in a few days what the US can't do in decades.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — New Zealand will ban military-style semi-automatics and assault rifles, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Thursday, just six days after attacks on two mosques in Christchurch that left 50 people dead.

“On 15 March our history changed forever. Now, our laws will, too,” Ardern said. “We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place.”

She also announced a buyback scheme to encourage people who own such weapons to surrender them.

EXACTLY. Because New Zealand doesn't have an NRA - backed by conservative and Russian money to promote weaponry that kills US.

Short answer is the NZ constitution is not the same as the US, not even close. Beauty of our constitution is you can’t just go “HA HA HA freedom it be gone”.

But if you want a much longer answer you take the constitutional aspect plus the sheer number of firearms and the fact the only way to enforce a true ban in this country would result in house to house searches, confiscation, and another civil war.

Such lunatics... just one shooting and they ban rifles.
Who would do so?

Yes. And those loonies in Australia did something similar. If only those people in the mosque had some rifles, mortars and hand grenades we'd be cheering how they slaughtered the bad guys.

I’m wondering about the gun buy back. Is the citizens going to get the value of what the weapon is worth? Or are they just going to get a $5.00 gift card for Wall Mart?

If they're doing it the same way Australia did people won't be getting ripped off for the amount they paid. (If I'm remembering correctly... Correct me if I'm wrong)

And in all reality, it's worth it. If I had to give up my guns in order to help collectively get the number of gun deaths in the US down I wouldn't have issues with that.

My guns don't keep me safe. They're not making me less likely to become the victim of a violent crime. They aren't going to save me if the government decided to go tyrannical.

I don't support repealing the second amendment all together, but I do support MUCH stricter gun laws than we currently have.

Sweden has a pretty decent firearm policy. Just randomly wanted to throw that in there.

Because we all know it's common in the USA to have at least two hand guns and a grenade with you, every time you visit a church ;)

No, then the loonies on the right would be yelling, " See? All the Muslims are armed. They're dangerous". Have we all forgotten that they scream about how it's every Americans right to bear arms but sat silently when a man was shot to death in his car just for having his legally licensed gun in the glove box?

dont want to perhaps sarge

taken a mass shooting killing but ..thats happebed frequently elsewhere huh

See how easy it is.

no indication the govt will be pennypinching with the buyback scheme

we are fortunate enough to still be small fry and not have a multitude of politicians arguing and not agreeing to anything
plus
it gave the country the shits, rightly so

New What impresses me is not just that New Zealand took action so quickly, but that they actually see a mass shooting as a big deal.

Compare that to the U.S. . . . :(

We see mass shootings as big deals. It’s just that most rational people understand that guns don’t kill people. In 2017 roughly 14k people were murdered using firearms. Nearly 11k were killed because of drunk divers. Where are the calls for common sense alcohol reform? How can we allow such a deadly substance to be sold to just anyone? Should we make drunk driving illegal if it saves just one life? Oh wait...

Drunk driving IS "illegal" asshole

Drivers, drunk or otherwise must be licensed by the government

They must have completed government sanctioned training in order to get that license

They must demonstrate proficiency at driving to a government official in order to get that license.

They must routinely renew that license and there is not a single state that has any form of "shall issue" provision" WRT the DMV and drivers licenses

They must carry liability insurance in case they cause harm or otherwise damage someone.

If they show repeated disregard for the safety of others due to "alcohol involved incidents" IE "DUI's" etc etc even if no one is ever harmed much less KILLED they can have that license revoked and even have any and all vehicles they may own confiscated.

NONE repeat none of these things are true for firearms

Guns do not kill people?

Well you know what cars do not kill people either so lets just let anyone who can scrape together a few hundred or a few thousand dollars buy one and go out and operate it and if people are getting killed right left and center because of it , oh fucking well that is "just the cost of freedom" so lets do NOTHING about it.

I am so sick of hearing people say "guns don't kill people".

YES THE FUCK THEY DO.

Just because a person has to use the gun, doesn't mean the GUN isn't the cause of death. The person who pulled the trigger is responsible, but the actual gun is the reason a death occurred.

Knives have other purposes as tools we can utilize. Cars too. Any other "deadly weapon" has more than one use. Guns, they are ONLY designed and created to END LIFE. They were designed for the sole purpose of killing. So, how is it that they "don't kill people" when that is literally why they exist? To kill human enemies and kill animals for food... Excuses are bullshit.

To be honest rb...did not know an NZ PM could do this without a national referendum. Maybe you differ to our government over there a little.

Once again old buddy, sorry a dimwit aussie caused so much grief in your beautiful nation. As if Mother Nature and your earthquakes are not enough.
