Apparently Green Bay Packers star NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers is allegedly closeted and his gay boyfriend/former roommate/personal assistant Kevin Lanflisi is upset because he would not make their relationship public over the summer like he promised, and so Kevin spilled his frustrations over twitter about their split.

I think it's wishful thinking on the part of gay sports fans. I don't think Aaron Rodgers is gay. But if he is, I think his coming out story will send a good message to people that believe there is no place for gay men in sports. People (regardless of team affiliation) recognize Rodgers' talent and sexual orientation <i>shouldn't</i> change their view towards him. It'll be interesting to see how this story plays out.
 
I love the line, he's too talented of a football player to be gay. What is this the 1950's. You would be surprised how many closeted gay athletes are playing competitive sports. Is Rodgers gay. Maybe, maybe not. If he is, he will never come out while he's playing. Would be nice if he did, he could be a good role model for younger athletes. Not bad looking either.
 
Pity. I imagined Aaron Rodgers with someone hotter, LOL. That guy's scary looking.
 
I don't know if Aaron Rodgers is gay or not. I don't think Mr. Lanflisi's rumor-mongering would constitute proof all by itself. While I don't think for even a moment that saying that someone is gay is a slanderous thing, it is still wrong to out someone else. Mr. Lanflisi is either a liar trying to get publicity for himself, extort money from Mr. Rodgers (which is now not possible, since he has gone public), and do harm to the reputation and marketing potential of Mr. Rodgers; or he is telling the truth in which case he is still trying to get publicity, extort money or harm Aaron Rodgers. In any scenario he paints himself as a destructive, untrustworthy troll.

There are 2 potential lessons for everyone, especially celebrities. First, in life you will meet some terrible people that will try to harm you, including former friends and lovers. Second, if you are in the closet, you have information that some people will exploit for their own benefit. Come out, and that goes away.

Aaron Rodgers is or is not gay. I don't know, and I don't particularly care (although, if you ask me out Aaron, my answer is a definite yes!). He seems like a nice enough guy, a good quarterback and fairly handsome to boot. I wish him luck in his life and career as I would anyone else. If he's gay, I hope he realizes that coming out is ultimately a wonderful thing because it allows you to be normal. If he's not, our loss.

IDK, the reliable sources I know of have always been on point about closeted athletes. Apparently, this has been hinted at for years prior to Mr. Lanflisi's sub-tweets...

I reiterate my point: whether he's gay or not, Lanflisi's tweets don't prove it. And they have an agenda, a red flag for me in attributing trust to information (I do not trust Mr. Lanflisi; if he is telling the truth, it is a coincidence). My straight best friend was my roommate for 5 years. We would have appeared to be a couple if you didn't know us. Rodgers might be gay. Beyond attributig credit to rumor, we do not know it. I am not hoping for him to be either gay or straight. Just stating that since most men are heterosexual, and we don't have proof he's gay, I will think he's straight until I know otherwise.

Why does it matter if he is Gay or Straight?
As long as he is good at what he does and he's not hurting anyone then let him come out when he is ready or leave him be if he is not gay.

I don't understand why people are so obsessed with other peoples sexuality these days, the same with British Diver Tom Daley. He should not feel he needs to explain himself to anyone. As long as he is happy.

Fenris: In a perfect world, you would be right. This is not yet that world, and because it is not that world, it matters.
Strength in numbers: The more people come out as, Gay, Straight, Bi or even Pan sexual. The more we all talk about it, see it, hear about it. Over time it will not matter, and by then everyone should have his or her legal rights to be who they are, and with whom they want.
Until that day, it matters.
Think differently, look at Russia, Italy, Uganda to name a few. We are not there yet, in fact we have a long, long way to go. So yes, by all means talk, talk, talk about it, us, them.
 
Fenris11, I agree completely that it doesn't matter. I think everyone has a fantasy or 2 (or more) in their head about a celebrity. Look at my galleries and you can see that I've dreamed about many a dude. But, if you're gay, your fantasy probably involves said celeb also being gay, and thus attainable in the Candyland of your mind. And while I wish Trey Hardee were gay and would ask me out on a date, I draw a line at actually thinking or declaring him to be gay. I think some people extend their fantasies into the semi-make believe world of the Internet, and grasp at any string that might hint that the object of their affection is also gay. Mostly that is harmless day dreaming. And that is the cause, I think, of 95% of the "is X celebrity gay" postings at LPSG and elsewhere on the 'net.
