Thinking a bus seat is analogous to the National Anthem or respect due or flag is like thinking men in dresses should be able to use the ladies room.

"AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, I HAVE JUST WRITTEN A BOOK ABOUT GOD. THERE’S A PASSAGE FROM THE BIBLE I’D LIKE TO QUOTE FOR YOU. IT’S FROM PROVERBS 3:31 AND IT READS, “ENVY THOU NOT THE OPPRESSOR AND CHOOSE NONE OF HIS WAYS.”

TODAY, THE OPPRESSORS ARE THE BULLIES OF THE NFL WHO KNEEL OR HIDE WHEN OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM IS PLAYED, FORCING A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE TO WITNESS THEIR VILE, INSULTING, AND UNINFORMED VIEW OF WHAT AMERICA STANDS FOR.

I’LL TELL YOU WHAT AMERICA STANDS FOR. WE ARE A NATION IN WHICH NO CITIZEN IS TREATED DIFFERENTLY UNDER THE LAW, REGARDLESS OF THEIR COLOR, RACE, FINANCIAL STATUS, CREED, OR NATION OF ORIGIN. EVEN THESE HYSTERICAL MILLIONAIRES HAVE RIGHTS.

SO I ENCOURAGE ALL OF YOU TO DO THE SAME: EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS. TURN OFF YOUR TVS. “DO NOT CHOOSE THE WAYS” OF THE ANARCHISTS, THE IGNORANT, WHETHER THEY TAKE THE FORM OF NEO-NAZIS, ANTIFA…OR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES." -- Michael Savage

Don't blame me, I didn't type it. It is still easier to read than b.c.'s bold black font which appears to be some type of commentary on his black supremacist viewpoints.

I wasn't blaming *you* for the caps, or suggesting *you* try decaf.

Now, blaming you for *posting* that drivel, that's another matter. :D

I don't see why some people care so much about whether or not someone they themselves don't respect in the first place are "disrespecting" the flag. Salute your flag and move on with your life knowing you're just so much better... Or whatever.

I say anyone trying to keep a fellow American citizen from peacefully protesting would be the one truly disrespecting our symbol of fucking Freedom.

I understand your point and it's a good one, but for me (and many others), the anthem and flag are just different. Some of us volunteered to defend this country and those symbols have a special meaning. Part of what we defended was the right of Kaepernick and others to behave in ways with which we disagree. And I've said here many times that the government should not abridge that right.

However, private entities are not mandated to afford others free speech rights. And Kaepernick and others who have chosen to shit on our country, its citizens and values have detracted from their message by allowing themselves to be manipulated in their methods.

I think striving for a better future for people of color in this country and demanding more because they know that we can do better make Kaepernick and his followers a hell of a lot more patriotic than the "patriots" who think that they should just settle for their current conditions and refuse to push for positive change.

If exercising the *exact rights the country was founded on is considered shitting on it then I can't bother to continue this discussion.

People blabber on about American values... Protesting the government is one of our most talked about/defended ones. Unless you happen to be a minority... Then I guess you're supposed to shut up and go with it. Fuck that

There are two thinks I would like to talk about.

First, if you agree that one of your fundamental freedoms is free speech, I think you would also have to argue that the way of protest has to be just as free. Protest is only successful, if the public notice it. To protest in a moment that will create audience is a proper way.
That some feel offended is the problem of those who feel this way. They have to deal with it, accept it as what it is "protest" and shouldn't distract by discussing the way of protest too long.

Second
How is it possible to "defend" freedoms by a symbol or a symbolic act that is TOTALLY accepted? If you want to defend or fight something, you will need symbols and actions that are against common standards.
But the only thing you do right now, is to show support. - and by saluting just a very minimal one (I don't say you don't do anything else, just say saluting alone isn't much)

I think we do not disagree. The right to protest peacefully, whenever and wherever is absolute. But that is neither to say that there are no consequences for the individual involved, nor that a particular act is likely to be effective.

If you protest and your protest is justified, you shouldn't fear negative effects.

That is not correct. The prohibition against government interference is one thing. Individual or corporate response is different. Actions, like elections, have consequences.

I see what you say and understand your position, but I don't agree with it.

For example, we had some right wing demonstrations in Germany in 2016. One should have been in front of the dome in cologne. The Bishop didn't allowed it. While I like it that he shows a clear position against racism, I do have to accept that this limited the freedom of protest.

The same counts for "not saluting the flag". To use it as a protest is totally justified and shouldn't even criticised.

There is one thing this whole debate shows is how meaningless the salutation has become. If it's possible to use it as an act of protest and people are so obsessed about it, shows that people are no longer free to choose to salute or not.
So, if everyone is more or less forced to salute, you no longer know what the salute for.
