In a slightly related vein, the Australian Federal Police commissioner has copped a lot of flak over the last couple of weeks for claiming that "global warming related issues" will be a major security issue in the medium term future.

What's he thinking of I wonder?
Eco-terrorism could by the next BIG THING! Austrailia has already seen horrific effects of global warming. Some of us will have to wait till it comes to LA to realize it.

a very interesting point this award being given to al gore. i wonder if the reduction in global warming is being linked to the increased use of nuclear power being used for hydro production thus increasing the available (left over ) fuel for weapons production ?

LOL -- I'm often caught in the middle of that one. My ex- (and very good friend) thinks that Mr. Gore walks on water, and my s/o thinks he's the devil's spawn.
LOL your caught between your Ex and your current's opinion----step back and tell us YOURS

LA8PV answered this already in Post #3: He said:

"One can argue that this is more an environmental prize than a peace prize - it seems the Nobel peace prize committee has been broadening their arena the past 10 years or so. But I have no doubts that the committee made this decision with no outside influences.

"The committee is appointed by the Norwegian parliament, and its members have their own political views, which will of course influence the decision they make, but - as a Norwegian myself - I see no reason to doubt the integrity of the committee members."

I don't have one. A relative of mine applied for (and failed to get) a Nobel prize, and I've always wondered about it.

As to Mr. Gore's crusade, I think it's necessary to raise awareness, but I don't think he has posed any real solutions to Earth's problems. Then again, that would place the prize in a completely different category.

As to global warming -- if this many scientists (with all their PhDs) are arguing about it, who am I to take sides?

Honey, it's all politics! Al Gore has been chimeing in on this since the early 1980's before it was popular to bash it when it was still science! I have no idea why people want to tear this man up! Its all politics. His one mistake is when he said about creating the internet. Well in fact he was crucial in the development of the internet with others. You must be able to see politics thru the smoke.Get on board use your brain you don't need a Phd to smell bullshit!

A minority of climate scientists question the degree of human influence on climate. None are arguing that the last decade has easily been the warmest on record.

Its talk show hosts who want you to believe there's huge doubt and debate about climate change that's being hidden from the unsuspecting public.

The funny thing about it is you dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out! You dont even need to take HS science class ,any other opinion is shear douche baggery. I am never SURE of anything ,so I don't bet, this is a sure thing And I am willing to bet your life and your childrens life on it!

I agree, SpeedoGUy -- who knows if it is ALL man's doing. But the last major catastrophe was millions of years ago, and I seriously doubt that pollution from dinosaur's doo-doo instigated the volcanic eruptions that ashed the skies.

In any case, like I said, I don't take sides, it's very interesting to hear both sides.

Other than movies, stupid celebrities and "the war", it seems that Mr. Gore's crusade is the only other American export in recent times.

Yeah, between producing virtually all globally influential pop culture on the planet, rock and roll, rap, R&B, pop, jazz, Hollywood films, video games, the personal computer, the internet, food, soft drinks, clothing, language, numerous other things... we've really been slacking off lately.

Seriously though, you can't go anywhere in the world anymore without seeing the mark of American cultural hegemony. and... Al Gore would have to be near the bottom of the list of anything we've contributed in terms of salient influence. Outside of the United States there really isn't that much "debate" about whether or not global warming exists or should be cause for concern. I think Gore has actually had a much bigger impact on the world for the role he played in legislation that helped bring about the internet. Seriously.

I truly think there's three sides. There should only be two sides:

1) Al Gore is a humanitarian, a patriot and an ex-politician.
2) Al Gore is a patriot and an ex-politician who believes himself to be a humanitarian but is really an alarmist about a complex issue who has at least done a lot of good to get people talking about globel warming and the environment.

But suspiciously there's a third side:

3) Al Gore is a danger to society, unpatriotic, unAmerican.

To believe this last one, a person would have to have a hidden agenda or be a drinker of the Kool Aid.

LOL -- yes, we HAVE been slacking off lately!! I truly was talking about very recent years, especially as a counterpoint to the war on terror, which unfortunately has become a terrible war, and is the "biggest" export in terms of media coverage.

(I lived a third of my life overseas, and I'm not unaware of the effects of American culture. Americanism is greatly loved, it's the current politics that are under the gun)
