I think novice would be a great moderator. I've met him twice in person and he's a nice guy. Also, I think he knows the most members in real life, he's met at least 8 members. On a site where sometimes it can be hard to tell the real from the fake, I think novice will be an invaluable asset, a pillar of truth. Okay I'm getting carried away, but he should get a shot at modding this year.

What does knowing members in real life have to do with anything?

All I think when I read that is that it would make it difficult for him to be fair and impartial should he ever have to judge them. Not a positive selling point.

Other than that I have no opinion about him being a mod. The more the merrier I say. It dilutes the power.

I completely understand and respect your point. BUT, having said that... if he is truly right for the job (or anyone, for that matter), then they'll be able to stay impartial regardless. I think we've all had to ban/warn or do some other equally unpleasant thing to people we enjoy, know, and respect on this site. But it doesn't keep us from doing our jobs.

As far as character goes, I haven't met him (yet), but we've been talking for a long time and he's a stand-up guy. He's also pre-dated almost everyone else on this site. He's very computer literate and the site's official bullshit detector. I think that all of these factors might help his chances... if he even applied.

I have really enjoyed all of these threads because partly they have been fun and also it's really nice to get input on the members feelings about a moderator-to-be. But frankly it all boils down to the the application, the members participation on the forum as a whole. Every application has been read and considered, and they will continue to be reread and considered until the right fit is agreed on by everyone making the final decision.

To add to this point, the man has been here a whole day longer than I have. I've always thought of him as a mod, and he seems to be genuinely concerned about the site, unlike the mods in the past and people who have been applying. He's paid his dues, he's a decent chap, and he's got a great ass.

That's good to know. Thx for the update. Personally I don't think a moderator should be voted on by the population of the site. It should be decided by folks already doing the job and a good interview process.
Everyone nominating folks they like would NOT want one of their friends or loved-one posters to be the one to tell them that they are banned. For this and the other reasons i posted in my long post before. This should be a 'back room' thing. IMHO coming from someone that was a moderator on another site.

Good.

I assumed that's how it was done.

Best of luck my friend.

A whole day? I didn't know that you were here that long, Jeff. For some reason your's and NB's names didn't come to mind when I posted on my Moderator thread. I wonder why. You two have a great, long track record: 3 ban-free years.

We won't necessarily be picking just the most prolific posters. A couple of my favorite applications were from people I'd never heard of before. One moderator mentioned that they at least wanted people with enough post history to prove that they aren't trolls, and enough post history to show their true personalities a bit.

Well that's kinda of what I meant. Applicants don't need to be rabid posters. There are probably lots of sound mind and fair people that read the site everyday that have a fair hand to lend to decision making. Besides any candidate that was picked that wasn't serious about that decision would be found out very soon.

I know what it's like. I've been in back room decisions where we were picking a new moderator before. You have to consider alot of things about the person. Fairness being very hi and their ability to see an arguement from all angles and leave friendships out of the equation.

Good to hear. It would be interesting to see unfamiliar names in the final selection.

Jeff,

I dont think anyone would put up with the crap of being a moderator here without to some degree caring about it. Yes, Novice may have some good qualities that would be an asset as a moderator but in the final analysis it will be up to the current powers that be to make that decision.
