Great suggestion. If guys want to to the towel dance, that's their choice/issue, but I don't understand how seeing my dick somehow is offensive to them.

I don't know how any guy can expect to go into a locker room and not see dick. If they can't get over themselves, that's fine, but they shouldn't expect those of us who have to change our ways.

Yes, we hung out naked in our army showers and with just boxers on in the barracks!
After the military, since we were now used to guy-to guy nudity: we hung out naked in the YMCA, the bathhouses. Even most rest stops were dick shows among strangers at the urinals.
Now that the majority of young men have not served: nudity has basically disappeared -- walls are being erected around each urinal in America !

The result of all this false modesty in America: guys don't see real guys' dicks anymore -- they only see them in porn and have unrealistic attitudes about their own size .

Quite true. Probably many young guys think that 9" hard and 7" soft is average whereas it is very unusual. Then too the lighting and camera angles used in porn can make a penis look much bigger than it is.
Remember the TV advertisements for Enzyte, a penis enlargement pill? The guy who used Enzyte would dive into a pool and his bathing suit would slip off. The men and women around the pool would look shocked to see what he had. At business meetings he took charge and everyone respected him, presumably because of his big penis. Obviously the advertisements were intended to convince men that having a big penis would confer respect and admiration. I think that the government finally stopped the advertisements because the pills were ineffective.

I have to say, I'm odd in that I can walk around nude, and frequently do at Korean spas, or wherever I can, but I can't pee in front of other people. I don't understand that either.

Hey Levi, it's a great article: the wiki one. I always thought that's why some guys always head to the closet toilets versus the urinals. Interestingly also: would be more discussion in the article on what leads to this neurosis. My hunch is poor sexual education secondary to religio-cultural influence.
I know many men who grew up with the understanding that erections were ONLY normal when looking at the person that was your wife...or whom you wanted to be your wife. These guys were usually an only-child or grew up in homes with severely enforced modesty issues...usually, but not always, secondary to Fundamentalist religious understanding.
What the army did was breakdown this misunderstanding and show that everybody wakes up with an erection, gets a "piss-hard", etc.
Also, because of the competitive nature of many males: once they see someone hugely hung in the showers -- they do not want to be near him at the urinal, for fear of being seen as little or inferior.
Also, the erection problem: if guys are socialized that erections are normal only when looking at women, then popping a piss-hard at the urinal could, secondary to poor education, lead them to think that somebody might think they were gay if caught with even an autonomic erection.

I don't think so at all. Guys get erections when they're nude together. It's very natural and a nice part of the bonding.

My experience with being nude with other men is somewhat different.
Until the late 1970s or so, men swam nude together in YMCA pools. We also showered nude together. Erections were quite uncommon although not entirely unknown.
