The paper ones suck. We use cloth gowns more like in hospital. Still not like being dressed but better than paper ones.

My doctor uses cloth ones too. As bad as those are I would LOL if they wrapped me in paper!

I vaguely recall going to med center in college for sports physical. Nurse left room to strip to underwear for doctor. Maybe that was just protocol for sports physicals.

I may be odd, but I was way more comfortable in MY underwear than in the doc’s gown thing. Of course underwear came down briefly for ball / hernia check (no prostate at that age). But then back on. Maybe the gown is like what they put you in hospital and that’s part of what makes them distasteful to me. I take my clothes off and it’s just me undressed (not a modest guy); gown on turns you into a ... patient.

Interesting perspective. I don't wear a white coat and don't introduce myself as doctor. I also try to never make patients wait for me. Hate that myself and hate to make patients wait - I think it's arrogant and just rude.

Hiya @Hairylegs , seeing we have a pro on the thread, I got a question: your opinion of finger vs PSA blood test? One, other, both?

Ty!
There is a great line in the book House of God (by Shem). "If you don't take a temperature, you won't find a fever." I've greatly reduced the digital exam. I like a baseline, but the money lies with the PSA. More specifically, changes in the PSA. We have a "normal" range, an intermediate, and a bud, you've got a problem range. I look for a change and a slow rise, especially in the normal range. That's where you tend to find trouble.

+1

There are some data to support this, but it's not great. We graph PSA and look for an inflection point...and discuss with patients that we think this is the best strategy but acknowledge that it's almost entirely unencumbered by evidence.

The UK's Dr. Dawn Harper explaining penises:
In another video she gently, albeit scientifically caresses a young man's testicles while the poor guy thinks thoughts of war-pestilence-famine and anything to avoid a raging erection. Why weren't any of my physical exams performed by a Dr. Dawn Harper-- equipped with a tape measure in order to establish if my penis was normal?

Well, let me tell my story here then:
I had some pain on my right testicle, so I went to the doctor. There I he asked me to stand up by the examination table and remove my pants, meanwhile he was closing the blinds . I dropped my pants right away, but then I realized the Venetian blinds were open, and that there were other buildings nearby. Meanwhile he tried I stood half naked on his office.
He left the thing open, since they were broken, so I guess someone else saw my exam that day.
After this I went to a clinic to do a testicular ultrasound.
The young nurse took me to the examination room and asked me to remove my pants and underwear, to put the gown on, and knock on the door after this. I undressed, keeping only T-shirt and socks, and got the gown. The thing was smaller than a shirt, so the tip of my dick and my balls were quite visible.
Embarassed, I knocked then she came in, gave a quick look to my privates, then asked me to lay down on the table. She stood there watching, but I got into a bad position, so when I tried to move up, the gown went up, I was fully exposed, my dick was going up and down meanwhile I tried to get into a nice position, and she was watching everything.
She left, the doc came, he explained the procedure. Gave me a towel to put on my stomach, I held my dick underneath, he opened the gown to expose my balls, and the exam went ok. He then took the towel off to check my right side hernia, leaving my holding my semi-hard cock exposed on my hand. The thing ended, he said goodbye and that was it.

When I was 35 I decided to have a vasectomy. During the presurgury consultation the doctor had me strip to my underwear, then eventually remove my underwear so I was naked. He gave me the roughest testicular exam I ever had. He pulled my nuts so far apart I groaned in pain and told him it hurt alot. He proceeded to examining my nuts, one in each hand, and as he did so his knuckles massaged my cock. Which of course responded and became erect. I did not go back to him for my vasectomy.

I recently changed dermatologists, a decision based on believing my care was not adequate. I was being followed regularly but only from the waist up. As a fair-skinned, slightly red haired, freckled sixty something with pale blue eyes who spent most of his life in the tropics, I have a fairly high skin cancer risk and my doctor was not even looking. Plus, they would not freeze anything that wasn't pre-cancerous. The new doctor introduced himself and stated that, of course I could refuse, but his protocol is go over the entire body. I greed and got into a gown. I guess I wasn't technically naked because I always had the gown on but he checked every square inch and froze about twenty findings. There was an assistant in the room writing things down.

I had a similar problem.I moved and got a new dermatologist who ignored what I knew were skin cancers. I had already had a melanoma a few years back. I changed doctors and had 19 early stage or pre melanomas removed inthe the first week. If I had not changed doctors I feel sure I would not be here now.

The fucking night gown thing they give you is ridiculous. They want you nude in a gown they can reach under easily and for the finger up the ass it falls away. I don’t mind being naked but the gown embarrasses me cause it seems like I am hiding shit I am I fact not trying to hide. My doc does feel my balls (five seconds each) palpates my dick head to look at the meatus (zither seconds). And he puts his gloved finger in my ass to feel my prostrate (ten seconds max). I’d rather be nude than in the sissy gown they put ya in.

I hate those gowns, too. Fortunately, I have seldom had to wear one.

Way back when in the dark ages - Military physicals were given with all the candidates in the nude

This was in the 60s.

No problems.

Totally nude military physicals for induction to draftees is a well known fact....

I can attest to this, not because I was in the military, but because I had two doctors who were ex-military doctors. The first was my pediatrician when we moved to a new town. He was a former Army doctor, and I was totally nude for physicals, with my mother in the exam room the whole time! Much later in life I went to my dad's doctor, who was an ex-air force doctor from the Viet Nam era. Again, exam was done full nude. Neither one bothered me.

I get checked every year or so. Fully nude. No gown.

I was half-naked, does that count?
I had an ultrasound on my testicles earlier this year, and I was only wearing T-shirt and socks. I had a gown that actually was some sort of shirt, but honestly I have no clue why I received it, since it covered almost nothing.
My dick and balls were quite visible, but only this female nurse and the male doctor saw them.

I had a testicle ultrasound exam, twice, and it foolish pretending I was covered up.

No idea why to receive a stupid small gown.
A gown is made to cover your parts, but since you have to expose them on the exam, there's no point on creating this stupid thing!
