I prefer a male doctor and since it's my choice, so far, I see a man for physicals. I would suspect a woman would prefer a woman for her exams.

Same. It’s not being sexist for me to suggest that being of the same gender might make things less uncomfortable, and if I am the paying customer and the one who decides, then I would prefer a man for a routine physical. All things being equal, and if I am lucky enough to have a wide list of doctors that choose from, I will select who I feel would give me the best care.

And now I contradict myself by saying I know it is all about me, because true medical professionals do not see any sexual component to a clinical office visit- so it really doesn’t matter. I know many doctors who are women, who are extraordinary at their career and if I was needing to see a specialist I would schedule with them in a second.

And if I was in an emergency I would have no problem allowing any or all medical professionals taking action to curtail an emergent condition. But if we are talking about scheduled and selected, I will give the first choice to someone like me.

I wonder if the customary gown is for my comfort or theirs? I'm not visually appealing. When I go to the doc they usually have me strip to my undies then put on the gown. I'll happy to skip the gown part as it seems rather silly. The doc is going to see everything anyway. I'm there so that the examiner can have a thorough look for problems so I don't want to be covered up. I'm concerned that the gown may cover up something that they need to see. Not sure how to skip the gown without looking like a pervert. I'm happy to sit there in my briefs during the examination......naked would be OK to.

I think the cover up is for them. I was getting prepped for a urology exam where they insert catheters. The nurse was cleaning my penis with betadine and made the remark that this is what she did all day. Didn’t sound excited either.
I’m okay with just underwear or naked. I don’t like having my clothes pulled up and around when being examined.

I had an experience a number of years ago that exemplifies the silliness of being overly modest.

I had to have a venous doppler - a doppler of the veins in my legs - because of some circulation problems. The tech told me to take off my shoes, socks, and pants. I was wearing white boxer shorts that day. I fully expected that he would be running that doppler wand up and down my legs. Well, mostly wrong.

For the venous doppler they spend about 75% of the time in the crease where your leg meets your torso - your groin, basically. So he had that wand - with all of that goo that they use for dopplers and ultra sounds - up into the leg part of my boxer shorts. Both legs. The test takes a good bit of time, maybe 20 minutes. By the time he was done my boxer shorts were soaked with that goo that they use. It made for a very uncomfortable ride home.

At the least, he should have told me what was going to happen, the goo up into my boxer shorts, and given me the option of removing them for the test (which I would have done).

So if you ever need a venous doppler, be forewarned.

If someone is wearing boxer briefs going into that test I cannot imagine how they can do it. In that case they have to tell the patient to remove his boxer briefs.

I had one by a female tech. Had on a pair of paper shorts but it was very intimate. Your dick and balls will definitely get felt up. They can't help it. It's there and they have to get up in your groin

I had a male tech the time that I described above. He really should have told me to take off my boxer shorts since he made such a mess of them.

I think the covering is more for the protection of the doctor, who might be afraid of being accused of taking liberties. If it went to court, the fact that the patient was naked, without any covering, would probably not serve the cause of innocence. In this litigious society, it's better to be safe. When I was younger, my exams were done with me naked throughout the exam. And, I was alone with the doctor from the age of eight, no parent present. My cousin who was 16 came to spend the year with us from overseas. He had to have a school physical, so I went into the room with him in case there was a language problem. He was allowed to keep his underwear on until the hernia exam. I though maybe that when you got pubes, the doctor let you keep the shorts on. However, when I was 13 and had a small bush, I still had to get naked . All of a sudden, it became a bit sexually exciting, which is the case today, many years later. The doctor was old school, when the thought of impropriety and lawsuits were unthinkable.

Yeah I agree if I had had a mae doing mine I would have rather been naked but I guess she didn't want to see an old man's junk and I can see that

The gown is about patient dignity.

Although a silly article of clothing, it is so you are not stark naked for 10 -20 minutes.

I am fine with being naked, it isn't something that bothers me, I do get a lot of looks when I am though.

i wear the gown for full body skin exams at the dermatologist. at some point he checks my chest and penis so he'll ask me to slip it off at that point. i have no issue with this. seems like standard doctor patient exam routine.
