New York lawmakers rejected a bill that would have made their state the sixth to allow gay marriage. The bill failed by a wider-than-expected margin, falling eight votes short in a 24-38 decision by the state Senate. The bill had been approved earlier in the Assembly after Gov. David Paterson, a strong advocate of the bill, had pledged to sign it.

Gov. Paterson said that the failure of the bill was one of his saddest days in 20 years of public service and he criticized senators who he said support gay marriage but "didn't have the intestinal fortitude to vote for it."

I lived in NY for 31 years before I moved here to AZ. Really surprised the NY senate didn't pass this bill. Most NYers I know were very open minded and it makes me sick that it comes down to a select few to represent the rest of the state.
