Although I'm a happy expat, I'm also a solid tax-paying citizen of The Silver State. Along corridor I-80 you will discover that almost all the little towns have brothels. Most recently, one of the brothels in Elko has begun to offer same-sex services (although the house gets a 40% cut). The counties along I-80 are as red as the State of Ewetaw, but the citizens realize the benefits of legalized prostitution. The State laws do not address the idea that prostitution is "immoral" or "bad." It leaves the God police out of it altogether. The State is primarily concerned with controlling crime and getting a handle on the pervasive health issues of STDs. And they do a pretty damn good job of it. In little old Wells, Nevada (population about 900 in the middle of the winter) even the mormon city councilmen and women realize that without legalized brothels (there are only two) there would be no medical care for anyone except 50 miles away in Elko. So, everyone -- especially seniors who need cheap doc visits for medication refills -- benefits -- as does the City tax base.
However, you'll find the police in Reno and Sparks are just as rednecked as most uneducated males and more than happy to bust gays for public lewdness (kissing one another in a gay bar or holding hands). But it doesn't happen that often.
The idea that prostitution should be illegal and johns be caught in police stings is like rolling back to pre-StoneWall days when the police regularly busted gay bars -- especially those gay bars that catered to drag queens and put on drag shows. This police hate behavior needs to be constantly challenged. However, carrying a hand gun I believe is illegal in New York City. I welcome correction on this. Still, we shouldn't have to carry around guns to protect ourselves.
Just as mormons poured millions of dollars against Proposition 8 in California during the last National Election, gay men and women should be sending $10 and $25 checks to non-profit legal defense funds to help these "trapped" victims pay for legal fees and fight for their rights.
What's next? Are they going to go door to door in Cherry Grove to ferret out the gay residents and put them in concentration camps? "Oh, no! We can't have real, live homosexuals running loose on the streets of our newly Disneyfied Manhattan!" Yet another reason to book direct flights from Spain and South America to Las Vegas or LAX when I need to get back to the "ranch." Stuff like the article in the original post just pisses me off.
Now ask me how I really feel about it.
