The inability and partisan politics which have become a hallmark of this administration are destroying this country. I feel horrifically sorry for Obama. He has so much to do and in nearly everything his hands have been tied. After the crash of 1929 F.D.R. and the required branches of the United States government passed sweeping legislation to prevent a replay of the events which took place in that disaster. When the '29 disaster happened there were ZERO safeguards and it was not until things were far worse than what we have now that F.D.R. found himself without choice "spending" the country out of the depression created by private industry and banking with taxpayer dollars. At that time the conservatives absolutely mirrored what is now taking place. It was Roosevelt's use of the limited media available which placed the few Americans not starving to death in a position of being able to apply pressure to their representatives and things got done. In spite of the best efforts made, in reality, at the end of 10 years and the beginning of World War II the United States was still in the final throes of a lingering depression. The industrial might of the United States at the time and our abilities to build the materials of War is what really began to turn things around. When, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor a conscription was enacted, it was the drafting of many of the Unemployed from the bread lines into platoons that removed people from such organizations as the W.P.A. and C.C.C.. Again under a great deal of pressure, legislators enacted benefits for those serving in the United States Military to help these men transition back into civilian life in a post war world. The G.I. "Bill of Rights" being one of the many things done to help that transition.
As the War ended the United States almost slipped back into a depression because there was not sufficient time for Industrial America to completely strip out manufacturing plants and to re-tool for production of the goods that most Americans had been starving for. In fact horrific shortages continued on because the handwriting was on the wall for Korea within 5 years of the end of WWII.
The ultimate truth in the world is that those who do not study the history of the past are destined to repeat it.
I am 57 years old. Because I came late in life for my parents I had the entire lecture on the problems of the depression and of World War II growing up on nearly a daily basis.
My Biological Father was born in 1917. He was 12 years old when the "idle rich" without regard to the welfare of anyone other than themselves led us to the '29 crash. His Father (my biological Grandfather) had died the year before of a mastoid infection and in order to keep a home, my Paternal Grandmother took in her Mother and the labor force of two elderly women and two kids was what put very little food on the table, and kept electricity going to survive. The family car had to be sold. The floor radio had to be sold, transportation became two legs and what little public transportation was available in Los Angeles at that time. My Paternal Grandmother took in laundry and did bookeeping. My Paternal Great Grandmother did the ironing of the laundry taken in and cooked the meals. My Father a boy of 12 delivered newspapers and magazines and my Aunt cleaned houses for neighbors and babysat as much as she could to bring in additional money. The kids did not get to keep the money because even the few dollars they earned every month were necessary to support the home.
My Stepfather, born in 1907 grew up on a farm in North Dakota. It was decided by the family that he was the one most likely to succeed and he was the youngest. All of his brothers and sisters worked and paid for Medical School for him and he went on to become a physician. In 1929 when the crash came he was finishing school and worked as he could to contribute to his own and if he had extra, he sent money back from California to North Dakota.
During Winter months unlike right now, people were dying in the streets from exposure.
As this was all happening the same thinking of many conservatives today railed on and on against any help for the poor. The work programs undertaken during the depression were according to some a "waste of taxpayer dollars" and created "big government". Banking and industrial lobbiests screamed bloody murder at the controls that were put on because banking wanted to go on as usual dealing in high risk situations and taking major chances with the money of depositors with impunity.
What we have now is no different. The main difference of course is that few if any of the people in "big business" care about anything but their own pockets. When the depression is discussed, few realize that in spite of all the screaming, Henry Ford, Walter P. Chrysler, the Vanderbuilts, the Rockefellers and all the rest were just as rich as ever and were very unhappy that protections could change what "they" did.
Though there is guilt on both sides, the main people who seem to be screaming about solving the problems or controls to prevent problems are those who will profit most if nothing is done. Remember in politics when any group screams. Follow the money, and figure out who will profit from no change! Failed policies whomever enacts them and sadly these came under multiple administrations which could be classified as "conservative", always make money for somebody.
How many of you on this board work for General Motors?
I have three friends who were on pensions from GM in Michigan. When GM declared Bankruptcy most GM retirees lost 100% of their medical benefits from a lifetime of work for that corporation. Now, because of advancing age and pre-existing conditions these people are unable to obtain any insurance they can afford on the fixed income of a pension.
I still think Obama is a spineless coward, because those to whom he has tried to be conciliatory and with whom he has tried to negotiate could care less about anything other than themselves.
Those of you who feel that a return to policies of the past is wise are sadly very misinformed. Conservative commentators make the statements they do not because of education or common sense. They are paid by major corporations who stand to make billions of dollars if these individuals can convince you the American People that change is bad.
When we discuss the Obama Adminstration, we need to remember that for at least another three years this man good or bad is the ONLY hope we have. If we roadblock everything we have stagnation and in this case stagnation and lack of movement will not help anything in fact it will make it much worse. Remember too there is profit for some in "much worse". Who will make money if jobs continue to be exported? Ask yourself these questions and if you really take the time to cut off the media and look at the records as to who it was who sponsored what and who they represented at that time it can be quite an experience.
What we have now is nothing new. It is a total rerun. The uneducated to the details of the past will in another 80 years try and do it all yet again. Prevention and re-writes of history are common. What will be necessary in 2089 will simply be that those who survived the '09 melt down and be the witnesses to it will be by virtue of age all deceased.
If you understand the past you will have a key to things and some foresight into the future rather than hindsight into the past.
