WASHINGTON — In a dramatic reversal, President Barack Obama on Friday scrubbed a clean-air regulation that aimed to reduce health-threatening smog, yielding to bitterly protesting businesses and congressional Republicans who complained the rule would kill jobs in America's ailing economy.
Withdrawal of the proposed regulation marked the latest in a string of retreats by the president in the face of GOP opposition, and it drew quick criticism from liberals. Environmentalists, a key Obama constituency, accused him of caving to corporate polluters, and the American Lung Association threatened to restart the legal action it had begun against rules proposed by President George W. Bush.
The White House has been under heavy pressure from GOP lawmakers and major industries, which have slammed the stricter standard as an unnecessary jobs killer. The Environmental Protection Agency, whose scientific advisers favored the tighter limits, had predicted the proposed change would cost up to $90 billion a year, making it one of the most expensive environmental regulations ever imposed in the U.S.

Because of tighter regulations. Duh. Why don't you build a time machine and go back to California circa early 1970s to see what lax regulation does for air quality?

So Orwellian. The worst financial crisis since the Great Depression was because of a LACK of regulations. Millions out of work. But don't let facts get in the way.

I'd rather not be choking in smog. We can have clean air and jobs. The reason why American car companies lost much of their market share to Foreign companies was largely through the lack of producing efficient cars that were stylish enough for Americans to want. They didn't want any regulations, and they choked on their corruption.

I never see any smog where i live. there are emissions inspection on all cars made after 1996 if your car is made before 1996 there no emissions inspection and can make all the smog you like.

Another compromise the President has made with unyielding conservatives which will no doubt only receive criticism.

He didn't really have a choice, he is digging really hard as of late to appease as much of his opposition as possible.

But, yes, the EPA is out of control on their limitations and regulations. They needed to be given some restraint.

I don't see a plethora of stylish "hybrid" cars on the road from ANY manufacturer.

The extended manufacturing process of "hybrid" cars creates more emissions than the car would have ever produced as a standard internal combustion driven one.

Not really. If what he wants to do is appease the opposition, there is plenty he could do to win them over. What he's trying to do is keep the friends he has while also trying to ingratiate himself to his opponents while yielding as little compromise with them as humanly possible. He will find no one is fooled and people on both sides are getting restless.

Take a walk in any of the 3 big metro areas in California: Bay Area, Los Angeles/Riverside/Orange County/Ventura, or San Diego

Yes, because you know more about it than the President of the United States.

I honestly don't think B. H. Obama is attempting to fool anyone. He is trying to keep the wheels turning despite the Republican agenda of bringing things to a hault during his watch. That's what truly sucks about the political landscape these days. Apparently public health isn't a priority to entrenched with-us-or-against-us conservatives.

Just want to point out that when you get cancer, or some other chronic disease due to our polluted environment, what difference will it make if you had less taxes to pay?

You liberals do nothing but fall back on defense mechanisms. Disagree with the President, and you act like the fact that he's the President automatically gives him some kind of Midas touch. And this blaming everything on Republicans like we're the only ones who push agendas or clog wheels is getting stale. When liberalism goes back out of style and conservatism comes back in (which will happen again and again), we'll have fun doing the same. Same bullshit, different decade.

And I survived cancer in college, so save that one for someone who's scared of the idea.
