I don't know how you define well-known in this context but I've never heard of this "Happy Merchant" character before either. Suppose I could Google to find out the implication were I so inclined. If the avatar is in fact commonly perceived to be anti-semitic, I'd encourage @MikesJohnson to change it but I just assumed it was some play on the "Lying Hillary" theme. And it therefore made me smile.
