I started to read The Crimes of Love (1800 - Marquis of Sade), it's a good book, full of funny and pervertid short stories.

Yes, I am a libertine, I admit it freely. I have dreamed of doing everything that it is possible to dream of in that line. But I have certainly not done all the things I have dreamt of and never shall. Libertine I may be, but I am not a criminal, I am not a murderer. -- The Marquis de Sade

and ...

Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies ~ Russ Kick

God's Own Countries: Granta (many authors)

The King and I: Herbert Breslin (devastating bio of Luciano Pavarotti by his former manager ... work-related reading)

My Guru and His Disciple: Christopher Isherwood

Rovering To Success: The Rt. Hon. Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell (1922 edition... a real scream ... I should post some of what he says about masturbation)

I'm presently 600 pages deep into Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Only 500 pages to go! ha!

Next month's book club = A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick. Then we're all going to the theater to see the movie for a second time. :)

Almost done with Demian by Hesse, halfway through an anthology of SciFi from the late 60's edited by Harlan Ellison, stalled out in Golda Meir's autobiography, and have another dozen books in the wings, including Metamorphosis by Kafka, The Hummingbird's Daughter, Ahab's Wife, The Courtesan, and Crime and Punishment - just for fun.

Someone from this very group turned me on to Hesse, and has me intrigued about Pynchon, now, too. Men (and women) with big brains REALLY excite me. ;)

So,

What do you think of "Love"? I found it intriguing to say the least...

Just started! I'll have much more to say later - I've read all her stuff, most a few times.

Fiction: Life of Pi by Yann Martell

Non-Fiction (?): Fighting Words edited by James Charlton

Over 400 literary put-downs, backbites, and civil leers from the poisoned pens of great writers. For example:

“I prefer dead writers because you don't run into them at parties.” Fran Lebowitz.

“There are two ways of disliking poetry; one way is to dislike it,
the other is to read Poe.” Oscar Wilde

Today it's Full Circle by Michael Thomas Ford. Haven't settled on what is next. I usually read a book every day or two (if it's very long or I have interruptions.) There are at least 200 waiting and more on order.

I mentioned this in another thread, but Skinny Dip by Carl Hiassen. It's a perfect book for this heat wave because it's laugh-out-loud funny and takes my mind off things. I think most of his books are set in FL because he lives there, and he writes about sketchy, f*cked-up characters who are always trying to get away with something... and rarely do. Stormy Weather is another fave of mine by CH.

HI ,

I just completed Alice Hoffman's "Blackbird House". It explored the life of one ficticious house on Cape Cod from the Early 18th century through the 21st. A wonderful read. Her works are lyrical and full of magic....
