Oh Hell. Dishwasher Died.

Bloody hell. The dishwasher has died I think.

Put in a full load and ran a heavy duty cycle only to find that the detergent pits didn't open. I thought a piece of silverware was blocking it or something. No such luck. Ran another cycle. This time the pits opened but everything was bone dry and cold. Then I ran a normal cycle. Nothing.

Water just isn't getting into the dishwasher. Nothing spins, nothing gets wet. It does make its usual running noise.

It's an old machine, a KitchenAid from 1978 in a hideous shade of '70s wheat so I don't know if it's worth fixing. Does anyone think it worth repairing or should I bite the bullet and get a new one? As Hobart no longer makes KitchenAid I've heard they've gone downhill. I'd like to get an Engery Star model. Who makes good dishwashers these days? As you may guess, I haven't been in the market lately.

I think it's too old to repair. But the KitchenAid brand is still around. Whirlpool bought the entire brand from Hobart. The "70s wheat" color might be irreplaceable. It could have been worse: avocado green!

Yeah, sadly I've heard KitchenAids are now crap. It's very sad. It seems the well-rated ones are all very expensive while the less expensive models are all junk. I just want a decent cheap one that cleans the dishes.

If you read this post a certain way, it's almost pornographic.

You don't need to spend a lot on one. The most basic units will be ok for what they do, the operation (which is the same for most) couldn't be easier. Fills with water, heats water with a coil, pumps water into center spinner which spins just from the water pressure. You are lucky yours lasted so long. It shows you there isn't much to these appliances. You can spend a lot for looks and extra fancy touch pads with extra cycles and some that are better noise-insulated but if you don't need all this, I think for even a few hundred a most basic unit will do well for you. There is one called Roper at Lowes or Home Depot that I have here and I though of upgrading it but it works fine (and it is also just the right size and fits perfectly!)

Wow guys! Thanks! I'm happy to hear you like your Whirlpool Jeannie. I saw it got good ratings but I'm hearing so many conflicting stories about Whirlpool's quality. I know Whirlpool makes KitchenAid and Kennmore dishwashers which is why I've been so reluctant.

I can't believe this is happening. I just bought a new washer and dryer! UGH! Well, there's my 3. Nothing will break for a while now.

LMAO! :biggrin1: If it's from the 1970's you got your moneys worth and it is absolutely not worth fixing. Just run down to Sear's and get a new one.

The color name you are looking for is not wheat; but almond. Which is better than the hideous harvest gold my folks had for many years.

I hope mine doesn't die anytime soon. We've been together almost 10 years now, and she's great with laundry too.... :biggrin1:

....forgot to mention - she can cook like nobody's business, too!

Is that what this color is?
