Broadcast news (and CNN) is somewhat famous for being written with an 8th grade vocabulary. They always use words that even an 8th grader should be able to understand. However, as yourself are a perfect example of, Fox Corp discovered a huge untapped market of people who weren't watching the news, because broadcast news was too cerebral for them. Too often, these people didn't understand the grown-up concepts being conveyed with grown up words, so they wouldn't even bother watching. So, Fox created their own channel, and wrote it all at a 6th grade level. This has been Fox News' bread and butter all along; play down to the stupidity of viewers too ignorant and closeminded to watch the real news channels.

Tallpaguy speaketh the truth. Most news papers/news outlets follow style guides that require journalists write for an audience with an 8th grade education. A few don't, most do. However, during a period in my life when I managed a bunch of surly technical writers, we all took the afternoon off and enjoyed more than a few cocktails when the MILSPEC came on down from high in the military that we could write instruction manuals for readers with 9th grade educations. Imagine the freedom and sunlight that brought into all of our lives.

You're being far too kind. 6th Grader? Everyone knows most of them aren't even smarter than a 5th grader.
