The need for masc gay characters instead of embracing the queerness of the characters. How much insecurity with our sexuality does that make.

I’m not insecure and I love that they show the camp side of out queer world. However I don’t understand why that’s the only type of queer they seem to be able to write about. Where’s the diversity?

Agreed. But it’s more common than not on tv. It’s extremely rare to find masculine gay guys on tv. Almost non existent in fact. I would love to see some of that represented on tv, especially where their sexuality is a barely there characteristic of their narrative, it’s known they are gay but it isn’t some huge driving force of their life. They are just a masculine gay guy and there’s not much more to say on their sexuality. That’s me and I just never see it on tv. Some may say that’s boring but there’s plenty you could write to make their life interesting, it just doesn’t revolve around them being gay. If that makes sense.

completely agree. But it’s considered internalised homophobia. So we’re not allowed to embrace it. Because if we don’t meet a widely accepted stereotype then we aren’t really gay in most people’s eyes

What do you mean by 'queerness'? Do you equate it with campness, fem mannerisms, caustic bitchiness, and promiscuity? Those are the old, entrenched stereotypes. There are, and have always been, many ways to be gay.

I think that's what the movie 'Brokeback Mountain' was really saying, in addition to being a touching love story between two men. That movie is 15 years old now, and sadly it seems to have been a brave but isolated attempt to move things on.

I totally accept the camp queer aspect of our gay community. I just however see it as very lazy writing in drama etc when that is all they ever seem to be able to write about.

Yeah it would be and it is a shame that it would be unique. They don’t write straight people all the same way so I don’t know why they write gay people as all the same type of ‘gay’.

God's own Country is a 2017 movie that is as good as Brokeback

Yes, I've heard good things about it, and I can see the similarities, neither guy conforms to the widespread stereotypes. Set in the north of England. Will check it out. Thanks for the nudge.
