There had been over two years of War already in Europe (Britain included) since 1939.

So what is the very very superspecial event of dec 7 1941?

PS: I am sure we can find a cruel thing humans did to humans for every day of the year, feb. 29th included. So we def. have to find a way beyond this behaviour of violence and war. But not only on some strange special occasions, but any day!

It was the surprise element of the attack, albeit relations between the two countries had been under strain for a long time.

In Europe,Germany had been expanding/annexing it's borders year by year until the invasion of Poland on 1st.September 1939 with our subsequent Declaration of War on the 3rd.
We knew it was coming.

Most of those posting are too young & have no realization why America honors those of 'The Greatest Generation' on this day. Recognizing that there are fewer than 100 survivors of that day in Hawaii, find the Oliver North documentary on Discovery or History Ch., is the best I can advise- without getting into a political discourse. For those who can acknowledge that these were true Americans, due all our respect- I have a series of unpublished digitized photos from that day. They are from family scrapbooks of those who lived & fought to preserve the very liberties and freedoms you know today.
As Always.. God Bless America

It was hardly a surprise that something happened. The USA basically backed Japan into a corner, embargoing key goods until Japan withdrew from China. Essentially Japan's government was faced with a choice of

a) catastrophic loss of face; or
b) war.

Pretty predictable outcome.

Details of this and several other premises are uncovered in
the Oliver North documentary - worthy of consideration.
