I would agree that posting excessively unflattering generalizations about the populace of an entire state is not constructive and patently ill-suited to a healthy discussion.
While I don't generally approve of generalizing about a state or a region based on the worst (if true) stereotypes, I think you should get back to us after y'all get around to removing the Stars and Bars (Confederate battle flag) from the State Capitol grounds. :wink:How did this go from a thread about Rush Limbaugh to an attack on South Carolina?
I'm sure everything is perfect where you live no crime, zero unemployment, everyone is rich, good looking and super intelligent I suppose.
Yes we have our problems but I resent the statement that all those that inhabit this state are "rednecks and unintelligent". I think maybe some of you should look around your own house first before slinging insults.
I also agree. It's doesn't seem fair to post a general unflattering view of an entire state. But my first point was, and obviously not well understood, and still is that being even semi-well educated and multi-lingual is no longer considered a positive thing in the USA. Otherwise, people such as Plush Rush would not receive so much street cred for making up lies about Socialism, Obama's birth certificate, guns (which don't kill people 'cause we all know people kill people), "libertards" (a blanket term that covers everything a stupid, uneducated white collar, blue collar, silver collar or red neck doesn't understand), commie pinkos and "those god damn faggots who are directly responsible for the end of the 'Meircuh we love!" Should I go on? You all know the crowd Plush Rush plays to. And he definitely speaks the mind of the majority of late 20 to mid 40s white men who join LPSG and love to blame everyone else for their problems. Should I name names?
Secondly, according to those I've spoken to regarding the lovely Carolinas who are native to those two states, I've been told if I have other options for vacation travel I should go where the general mindset is not so narrow and christianist. After all, the majority of folks posting to LPSG seem to think that the USA is a "christian" nation. Yeah, that's intelligent thinking. No bias there, right?
Third, what surprised me by yesterday's experience was my friend and I were interrupted by a US citizen who still thinks the rest of the world needs to learn English so he can sleep at night -- or something like that. We wern't speaking English when he blurted over us at our table. Maybe he was lonely. We weren't. And he exploded into using "fucking assholes" so fast everyone was taken by surprise. Many restaurants attached to "must see" tourist traps have a section just for tourists. The man from Fresno, CA, and his wife ended up being seated in that section.
No, things aren't perfect where I choose to live. There is a great deal of social disharmony. But it's over real issues, not outright lies some obese, self-identified Republican conservative radio host tries to pass off as the truth.
Again, check out the profiles (if they've been willing to provide one) of the most recent 2010-2011 class of LPSG-ers. They tend to be scared, white, and dumb as a bucket of hammers. If that's being too general, tough shit. And now a few words from the mouth of the Republican conservative prophet himself regarding homosexuals:
"These people [gays] blamed AIDS on Reagan. Sound familiar? They blamed homelessness on Reagan -- you know why they blamed AIDS on Reagan? Because he didn't care. Because he never delivered a speech about it. And because of that, AIDS was spread. They actually wanted us to believe that Reagan had the disease, was sneaking into gay people's houses at night, and impregnating them with the disease and running out. And when we left their houses he went over to Grant Park, or wherever it was, Lafayette Park and stole the pork and beans of the homeless and took them back to the White House and fixed them up and at them. That's that kind of stuff they were saying about Reagan." - Rush Limbaugh.
This is a patch of a recent rant from the Plush man, himself, just to get the blood of the uneducated and scared worked up in the morning. You're welcome to defend it as free speech. And I'm welcome to call it what it is: 100% pure assholery.
Y'all be sure to have a nice day.
^You're right, any state that leaves Mark Sanford in power after the shit he pulled must be good people.
I'm not sure which "those" you're referring to, but lest I be swept up in the net, I'd like to point out that my comments were tongue-in-cheek, if based in an ugly reality. I would have thought that was clear, made more clear by the winky emoticons. The fact is, South Carolina does still fly the Stars and Bars on the Capitol grounds, though thankfully they have at least removed it from the Capitol dome. That's progress, I suppose. It's still a major black eye though, and it's hit the state in the pocketbook too - lost revenue from a whole lot of sporting events and several college tournaments for one thing, perhaps lost tourist dollars too.Really?
I don't wish to quarrel with those with whom I would think I'd be politically aligned.
But...
Wholesale indiscriminate trashing of the entirety of one of the 50 states in the Union by virtue of an anecdote or two, rendered second (third?) hand a gazillion miles away?
Count me out.

p.s. Charleston is quite lovely.
You see, that's the problem. It's not about you and your concerns. It's about the concerns of millions of other people, African Americans especially and those who empathize with them, including AA South Carolinians, who are deeply offended by the Stars and Bars flying on the Capitol grounds. Your utter disregard for their feelings and easy dismissal of their concerns confirms the typical attitude of most white SC residents. Yet you took such offense at having your state "stereotyped" by posters in this thread? Seems kind of ironic now, don't it? Not to mention hypocritical.Ahh yes, the Confederate flag. It amazes me how much time, energy and hand wringing have been spent on this piece of cloth. I do believe if just half the energy that has been spent on this issue were channeled into our real problems we might actually get something done for a change. As far as I'm concerned it can stay where it is. Oh I know I'm going to get flamed for that but really don't we have more serious problems to deal with than this?
South Carolina is gorgeous! Met some really sweet (and hot!) people down there.
Oh, yeah...back to topic.
Of COURSE Rush Limbaugh is an ignorant racist! I mean, look at his fanbase. That's what they crave.
I look to libertards for all the expertise on conservative talkshow ppl I don't even listen to. I have to guess Rush's ratings are at least 40% due to liberals tracking his every word. I don't listen to him, but get his "schtick" like Hannity just like those two MSNBC dudes..... Olbermann and Maddow.
Ahh yes, historical symbols of slavery. It amazes me how much time, energy and hand wringing have been spent on historical symbols of slavery. I do believe if just half the energy that has been spent on this issue were channeled into our real problems we might actually get something done for a change. As far as I'm concerned historical symbols of slavery can remain where they are. Oh I know I'm going to get flamed for that but really don't we have more serious problems to deal with than this?
