I would agree that posting excessively unflattering generalizations about the populace of an entire state is not constructive and patently ill-suited to a healthy discussion.

I also agree. It's doesn't seem fair to post a general unflattering view of an entire state. But my first point was, and obviously not well understood, and still is that being even semi-well educated and multi-lingual is no longer considered a positive thing in the USA. Otherwise, people such as Plush Rush would not receive so much street cred for making up lies about Socialism, Obama's birth certificate, guns (which don't kill people 'cause we all know people kill people), "libertards" (a blanket term that covers everything a stupid, uneducated white collar, blue collar, silver collar or red neck doesn't understand), commie pinkos and "those god damn faggots who are directly responsible for the end of the 'Meircuh we love!" Should I go on? You all know the crowd Plush Rush plays to. And he definitely speaks the mind of the majority of late 20 to mid 40s white men who join LPSG and love to blame everyone else for their problems. Should I name names?

Secondly, according to those I've spoken to regarding the lovely Carolinas who are native to those two states, I've been told if I have other options for vacation travel I should go where the general mindset is not so narrow and christianist. After all, the majority of folks posting to LPSG seem to think that the USA is a "christian" nation. Yeah, that's intelligent thinking. No bias there, right?

Third, what surprised me by yesterday's experience was my friend and I were interrupted by a US citizen who still thinks the rest of the world needs to learn English so he can sleep at night -- or something like that. We wern't speaking English when he blurted over us at our table. Maybe he was lonely. We weren't. And he exploded into using "fucking assholes" so fast everyone was taken by surprise. Many restaurants attached to "must see" tourist traps have a section just for tourists. The man from Fresno, CA, and his wife ended up being seated in that section.

No, things aren't perfect where I choose to live. There is a great deal of social disharmony. But it's over real issues, not outright lies some obese, self-identified Republican conservative radio host tries to pass off as the truth.

Again, check out the profiles (if they've been willing to provide one) of the most recent 2010-2011 class of LPSG-ers. They tend to be scared, white, and dumb as a bucket of hammers. If that's being too general, tough shit. And now a few words from the mouth of the Republican conservative prophet himself regarding homosexuals:

"These people [gays] blamed AIDS on Reagan. Sound familiar? They blamed homelessness on Reagan -- you know why they blamed AIDS on Reagan? Because he didn't care. Because he never delivered a speech about it. And because of that, AIDS was spread. They actually wanted us to believe that Reagan had the disease, was sneaking into gay people's houses at night, and impregnating them with the disease and running out. And when we left their houses he went over to Grant Park, or wherever it was, Lafayette Park and stole the pork and beans of the homeless and took them back to the White House and fixed them up and at them. That's that kind of stuff they were saying about Reagan." - Rush Limbaugh.

This is a patch of a recent rant from the Plush man, himself, just to get the blood of the uneducated and scared worked up in the morning. You're welcome to defend it as free speech. And I'm welcome to call it what it is: 100% pure assholery.

Y'all be sure to have a nice day.

How did this go from a thread about Rush Limbaugh to an attack on South Carolina?

I'm sure everything is perfect where you live no crime, zero unemployment, everyone is rich, good looking and super intelligent I suppose.

Yes we have our problems but I resent the statement that all those that inhabit this state are "rednecks and unintelligent". I think maybe some of you should look around your own house first before slinging insults.
While I don't generally approve of generalizing about a state or a region based on the worst (if true) stereotypes, I think you should get back to us after y'all get around to removing the Stars and Bars (Confederate battle flag) from the State Capitol grounds.

p.s. Charleston is quite lovely.

Really?

I don't wish to quarrel with those with whom I would think I'd be politically aligned.

But...

Wholesale indiscriminate trashing of the entirety of one of the 50 states in the Union by virtue of an anecdote or two, rendered second (third?) hand a gazillion miles away?

Count me out.

His term was up anyway, so what would be the use of getting him out of office a few months early really solve?

I'm not sure which "those" you're referring to, but lest I be swept up in the net, I'd like to point out that my comments were tongue-in-cheek, if based in an ugly reality. I would have thought that was clear, made more clear by the winky emoticons. The fact is, South Carolina does still fly the Stars and Bars on the Capitol grounds, though thankfully they have at least removed it from the Capitol dome. That's progress, I suppose. It's still a major black eye though, and it's hit the state in the pocketbook too - lost revenue from a whole lot of sporting events and several college tournaments for one thing, perhaps lost tourist dollars too.

I too take offense at the "wholesale indiscriminate trashing of the entirety of one of the 50 states". I don't think my comments specific to venerating the Confederacy quite fall into that category, and I'm not sure all others' comments do either, but that's for you to decide. Being more progressive and enlightened by far than is the norm for the area in which I live is nothing new to me. I empathize with those like me who suffer the (often unfair) stereotypes that persist about their home state or region, who vehemently oppose and work to change, but ultimately have no control over actions taken by local and state government, and who endure the further insult of being painted with that same broad brush by outsiders. It's grossly unfair, and I agree, enlightened people should think twice about generalizing, hence the caveat and the footnote in my last post. It also helps to have a sense of humor when you're the butt of the joke.

I have championed the South and my home state many times on this board, defending against the wholesale dismissal and denigration of the people and the region by outdated stereotypes that no longer apply. More often than not the insults are perpetrated and perpetuated by other liberal/progressive folk from other regions, which is a disappointment. However, there is at least a grain of truth in most stereotypes, and I recognize that. Still, it's good to be reminded not to get carried away. Whether it's relevant or not, I'm aware of at least three contibutors in this thread besides myself who live in or have roots in the South (sorry TG, Florida is not the South, I'm sure you're relieved), and MLB has been at times quite sarcastic about his own home state(s) and the residents therein, so at least he's an equal opportunity offender. FWIW.

Please note, I'm not making a general categorization about the stupidity of just the Carolinas, I'm applying that generalization to all 50 States. If SilverTrain had read a bit carefully, it is my friend born and raised in South Carolina who is dealing with a serious problem of having to return to a place where she obviously did not thrive and flourish. It's possible she might have had similar difficulty anywhere in the USA. I am not in a position to say. I do know, however, that in the last 8 years she has made a remarkable living as a free-lance consultant reviewing scientific papers spewed out by pharmaceutical and chemical companies from around the world, including the USA, while living in a country where she has to use a language she still has not completely conquered to survive. Also note that other "natives" of the Carolinas have advised me that I would most likely enjoy other places in the world more than their home states. As for myself, I try to avoid having to return to the USA whenever possible. And I can assure you that Arizona as well as Ewetaw are on my "no fly zone" list. Whenever I need to return to Nevada I pay on average an extra $500 to circumvent those States. Ewetaw and Arizona don't need my Dollars. Idaho will probably soon be added to that list, too. Evangelicals are thick as thieves in Boise these days looking for "faggots" under every rock and behnid every tree. Not exactly my kind of vacation spot.

My issue with the USA is that Plush Rush and his crowd play upon the ignorance of the general populace, making being uneducated somehow a badge honor among many 'Mericuhns. And the reason, as I've written many times before, that I write 'Mericuhns instead of Americans, is that the majority of people from the USA are completely unaware that they ellipse the A in that proper noun when speaking and just as frequently emit a soft u instead of a short a vowel sound at the end. Down Easterners have their own way of pronouncing the same word. Not my problem.

In my generation the pressure was on to get into a good college, a better graduate school, and accomplish something. The other choice was to end up in Viet Nam. Although the military wouldn't even look at me because I'm gay, VISTA had no problem accepting me to volunteer working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Four Corners area for 2.5 years. Boy, howdy! Was that ever a wake-up call! I would have probably done well in the Peace Corps, but they prefer graduate students and I had yet to get my undergraduate degree at the time.

Today, it appears "real patriots" in the USA want to eliminate the Department of Education. My guess is because they never learned how to spell. In Elko County, NV, the pressure is on to attend mining certification courses and get on the payrolls of Neumont Gold or one of the many other mining operations out in the middle of nowhere. To hell with the reality that mining is the original boom or bust industry and that getting a good mining job is no insurance against becoming unemployed and living in a trailer on food stamps. Who needs college? Well, how many hair dressers and manicurists can the USA support? Not that those aren't worthy professions. I like my barber. He's good at what he does. But I also like my CPA just as well.

The Plush Rush acolytes also see no value in supporting entities such as the Peace Corps (which barely exists) or even more important projects such as VISTA. When I still lived in the USA I served on the board of a non-profit adult reading program. We applied for and we were assigned one of the last VISTA people. He was from Baltimore and it was obvious he was more interested in what working for VISTA would do for his resume as well as get him out of Maryland than doing something constructive as an adult reading intern. We sent him back after a year of waiting for him to formulate a reason why he volunteered for our reading program and implement it. He just didn't get it. We tried a second time and received an equally inefficient self-starter who wasted more of our limited resources than helped us grow and serve the community. And by non-profit adult reading program, I'm talking about the largest one in Salt Lake City which doesn't receive any government money. It's all private donations.

I taught for more than 12 years at la Universitat de Barçelona and my evening classes were full of middle-age people from all over Europe who could speak or at least communicate reasonably well in English. However, they still wanted to improve their language skills. I do not see this and have never seen this in the USA. I have seen the exact reverse. At San Francisco State, Elko's Basin Community College and The University of Utah we repeatedly had to cancel foreign language classes because there was not enough interest.

And although I don't have to witness it as much, US citizens traveling abroad -- especially in groups -- are ill equipped to deal with local cultures. This includes 'Mericuhns who travel to countries where the primary language is English. A person can speak five languages fluently and still be a racist asshole. However, I go out of my way to avoid other US citizens when I travel, except a few (more than two -- less than four) expats who have become friends over the years.

I frequently get requests from people I know in the USA who are able to travel to Spain or Argentina or where ever I might be at the time asking if they can "visit." I usually lie and tell them I'll be out of the country by the time they arrive. Sorry, but maybe next time. And the reason for my outright lie is that I'm not interested in being someone's non paid translator and guide. So, by avoiding contact with 'Mericuhns is most likely the reason I don't see as much stupid behavior as I described, first hand, in my earlier posts. The float and gorge vacations offered by so many cruise lines make good money by ensuring their 'Mericuhn clients won't be bothered by pesky "natives" of foreign countries, except when supervised by employees taking them on guided tours off those giant luxury ships. God forbid a person from the USA might have to encounter and get a different view of the world than the one they carry around in their wallet.

My friend from South Carolina asked me what it would take for me to permanently return to the USA. I've thought about this a lot over the years and it would take a complete change in the average 'Mericuhns' view of the world. It would take a successful two-term "education" President who invested in the USA and its citizens general health and welfare. The Republicans had a rare chance when they held not only a full house and senate, but a complete flush with George W. I didn't hold my breath for any great enlightenment. I'm still not holding my breath. I guess I can thank Monica Lewinski and her stained dress for being the real fuel that rocketed me out of the USA for somewhere else to live. The out right nastiness of the US media outlets was too much for me. A US President getting a blow job from someone other than his wife seemed a big non-issue. But it's obvious who is in control of US interests these days. The general population of the USA is just too poorly educated to notice or even care. We've been purposefully dumbed down. The object lesson for the last 30+ years has been to keep us as stupid and distracted by "shiny things" as possible. And it's certainly worked.

I'm sorry to be so dismissive. But once you come to your senses and realize that it not necessary to be able to read to obtain a drivers license in the USA or attend the same civics classes that someone from another country must attend to become a naturalized citizen, well . . . go ahead. Give me all your good excuses for being free to be as dumb as you want to be. Granted, lots of 'Mericuhns are damn smart, intelligent, well-educated and are doing something to help the greater good of the country. I don't claim to be the smartest person in the world. However, I know a good scam when I see one. I'm just grateful to have carved out a semi-safe niche for myself so I won't be eating cat food from Safeways between now and my death.

I'd certainly like to see the USA become the world leader in technology and education once again. But I know from experience that you need to eat complete educational diet. You need those English class carrots along with the Algebra and Calculus meat and potatoes. You also need large glasses of basic instruction in music to get an extra dose of "smart" vitamins. The day the USA emphasizes education over buying foreign oil is when I'll consider spending more time in my native country.

So, go ahead. Tell me how wrong I am. I'm in the mood for a good laugh. But please realize I'm just as interested in hearing the constructive ideas of others on how to fix the current problem.

South Carolina is gorgeous! Met some really sweet (and hot!) people down there.

Oh, yeah...back to topic.

Of COURSE Rush Limbaugh is an ignorant racist! I mean, look at his fanbase. That's what they crave.

Ahh yes, the Confederate flag. It amazes me how much time, energy and hand wringing have been spent on this piece of cloth. I do believe if just half the energy that has been spent on this issue were channeled into our real problems we might actually get something done for a change. As far as I'm concerned it can stay where it is. Oh I know I'm going to get flamed for that but really don't we have more serious problems to deal with than this?

Charleston is too damn hot for me!

You see, that's the problem. It's not about you and your concerns. It's about the concerns of millions of other people, African Americans especially and those who empathize with them, including AA South Carolinians, who are deeply offended by the Stars and Bars flying on the Capitol grounds. Your utter disregard for their feelings and easy dismissal of their concerns confirms the typical attitude of most white SC residents. Yet you took such offense at having your state "stereotyped" by posters in this thread? Seems kind of ironic now, don't it? Not to mention hypocritical.

If that little "piece of cloth" is so unimportant and symbolizes nothing of great meaning, why not just remove it and end the controversy? The state has lost hundreds of conventions and tournaments from NAACP and NCAA boycotts worth millions in revenue. I predict eventually the flag will come down when folks like you and the backward fools running your state finally figure out how hard it's hitting the pocketbook. It's sad though that ultimately money will be the deciding factor over moral human concerns and respect for others' sensibilities.

p.s. On a personal level, people with your attitude annoy the fuck out of me, because you're exactly the sort I have to defend against all the time. "No, really, Southerners are not all ignorant rednecks". Thanks for making my job that much harder. I gave you the benefit of the doubt in my prior post. Thanks for proving me wrong.

I look to libertards for all the expertise on conservative talkshow ppl I don't even listen to. I have to guess Rush's ratings are at least 40% due to liberals tracking his every word. I don't listen to him, but get his "schtick" like Hannity just like those two MSNBC dudes..... Olbermann and Maddow.

Imagine if we changed Hypoc8's post to read, by simply changing Confederate Flag to something more generic, as in the following:

Ahh yes, historical symbols of slavery. It amazes me how much time, energy and hand wringing have been spent on historical symbols of slavery. I do believe if just half the energy that has been spent on this issue were channeled into our real problems we might actually get something done for a change. As far as I'm concerned historical symbols of slavery can remain where they are. Oh I know I'm going to get flamed for that but really don't we have more serious problems to deal with than this?

Fortunately, although racism is certainly alive and well in Nevada as it is throughout the USA, the NDMV requires both front and rear State license plates, and folks are pulled over (especially long-haul truckers) for displaying images or symbols such as the stars and bars are asked to remove them. They are considered much more offensive than the cartoon of a little boy pissing on the logo for Ford or Chevrolet, decals of which are illegal in many southern States that were once members of the Confederacy.

Yes, there are more serious problems in the USA, but it's not necessary to keep picking the scab off of old wounds simply because "great grandpappy who fought under General Lee" was also a fucking asshole.

^You're right, any state that leaves Mark Sanford in power after the shit he pulled must be good people.

Acknowledging the inherent sarcasm in that comment, one is inclined to ask:

Is that kind of like, circa 2005, saying that "any country that leaves George Bush in power after the shit he pulled must be good people"?

Does that cast some perspective on the problem of lumping an entire population together in a simplistic blanket judgment?
