i personally would just like to be able to log on without being reminded that i'm not white. oprah said it best "i don't remember that i'm black until you remind me that i'm not white".
Marley, I have to share an observation. I find it odd that when people are describing a situation that involves a minority, that fact has to be stated...
i'm not chastising anyone or saying that anyone is racist, it'd just be nice if, for one day, "black" didn't have to be a separate category.
These three statements are basically what this argument is about. Marley has some real good points, but I feel that he is appealing to the more cerebral side of the situation which has too much emotion and baggage to be interpreted correctly by some of the members. It is really going over some of your heads.
Are white people not aware of the connotations of the word "black"?
It's not that Black people have a problem with the word or term...
It is all of the negative imagery that is contained in the word "black"
First off... the good guys always wear white right? the bad guys wear black.
If something is "dark" it is negative or scary.
When you say the word "black" in America, you automatically conjure up images of slavery and racism... nobody can separate the connotations from the word... not you... and not I... especially not black folk.
Again... here is the
telling quote from Marley:
i personally would just like to be able to log on without being reminded that i'm not white. oprah said it best "i don't remember that i'm black until you remind me that i'm not white".
And then some of you wanna jump all over him for saying that...
I understand that whites are sensitive to the whole "racism" thing, but y'all need to try and be a little more understanding and
patient with black folk. You may bristle and get uptight whenever a black person brings up legitimate points on how they are objectified and diminished as a people, but you need to try be a little more kind and less driven with being "right" in matters of race. I am not trying to lecture anyone... I am merely pleading with you for a little more tenderness.
