The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony (1997)
I was surprised and pleased to see that on the list. I don't remember it getting a lot a airplay except on "alternative" stations. Maybe it did in the U.K.
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star (1979)
History note: The video for that was the first one shown on MTV.

How about Amber-"This is your night?"

That played forever on MTV. Remember the show 12 angry viewers where they'd decide if a video was good enough to be put on heavy rotation? This was pre-TRL.

Anyways, they passed through some of the most one-hittiest of one-hit wonders on that show.

Remember Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz Bronx Anthem? "Uptown baby, uptown baby. We gets down, baby upon the crown, baby!"

I wouldn't consider some of the artists on that list one-hit-wonders.
Shamefully I grew up with loads of those shitty '90's tunes so I know more of them than I'd care to mension. haha

Oh well

Swimming Lad, I was just going to post a similar message to yours. While many of the performers on this list are best known for one song in the US, some of them had other hits and long careers outside of the States.

Ditto to the two gentlemen above me.... I mean, the gentlemen who posted before me.

Spandau Ballet, Soft Cell, Sinead O'Connor....I wouldn't call these musicians one hit wonders.

Many of the others, well....yes. But some, like Survivor, had several songs that got lots of airplay.... For many, the genre they were in (disco, etc.) faded, or it was just the musician's/band's time to end or evolve into something else.

Take Matthew Wilder, for instance: he had a hit in the 80's called "Break My Stride", and he seemingly faded into obscurity, but the truth was he continued successfully as a musician and wrote and produced for others, like No Doubt and Christina Aguilera, got an Oscar nomination for his music in the Disney movie Mulan, and does other theatrical music.

There are too many omissions from the 70's or before to make this list comprehensive (as if only 50 songs could ever be comprehensive). Rhino Music had a great series of (over 20) cds of 70's one-hit wonder music called Have A Nice Day, and they were all wonderful, but there are always a few tunes that have the same effect as nails on a chalkboard.

In this list, it would be "Don't Worry Be Happy" that makes me bleed from the ears. :banghead2:

Say....just like most of today's top 40 swill.

They forgot

Ambrosia - Biggest Part Of Me

I love Ambrosia! There was also "Holding on to Yesterday" in the late 70's as well. They went thru phases of progressive rock, MOR-pop, and recently David Pack (group's founder, lead singer) had a small re-appearance. Nothing the media sank their teeth into (only to spit out, as the media does), but he's still around, and performing in smaller venues.

And, they were hot, too.

One of my favorite (I think) one-hit wonders, at least I haven't heard of any other songs by Murray Head...

Murray Head - "One Night in Bangkok". It's from the musical "Chess".

Wasn't the musical "Chess" written by some of the members of Abba?

Well, whaddaya know! :biggrin1:

The wikipedia entry pretty much sums it all up, it was a hit in London, came to Broadway and was panned and bombed. It reappears every once in awhile, and has the status of "cult" musical.

And Tim Rice also collaborated with Benny and Bjorn. :biggrin1:

One hit wonder wiki

I find veritable treasure exists in the form of songs by one hit wonders that didn't make the cut for the one hit:

Odd that I can't find the original vid for this: Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

So let's watch some underage girls lipsynch to a song about booze and sex on the dunes of the cape

Anyway, Rupert had another minor hit - "Him". I used to hear both of these incessantly on the Lite FM station I had to listen to at my first job, over the intercom at a hardware store. It's a neat little nugget, with the minor chords and walking bass line and weird vocal solo and all. This is Rupert on Don Kirschners' Rock Concert - lipsynching :biggrin1:

k... everyone knows Gary Wright's "Dreamweaver" - featured in various movies, staple of late nite classic rock radio headphones only deep cuts... as well it should, as Gary pioneered the use of Moog equipment in pop rock on the record this song came from, which makes this version of "My Love Is Alive" fuckin smoke. More cowbell! Steve Porcaro on bass Moog, brother of the late Jeff, drummer for Toto, Steely Dan, et al.

Another: Stephan Bishop did the theme for "Tootsie". He had earned the spot from the previous success of the seemingly one-off "On and On" a year or two earlier. Very pretty song. Slide guitar makes it.

Shut up about my Lite FM fetish - I think it makes me more interesting :biggrin1:

I am officially chronologically gifted. I too like most of those, own most of them, and remember when almost all of them came out. I will say that when the wife and I have our church ceremony next spring, there will be NO MACARENA at the reception.

HEEEEEEEYYYYY Macarena AIGHT!

That Wiki article also listed two more of my favorite one-hit wonders!

The La's - "There She Goes" (in the US this became a bigger hit as a cover by Sixpence None the Richer, who are not a one-hit wonder, they had another song called "Kiss Me" and I think they had one or two other hits).

Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance

 I love this stuff!!!

Oh, yes....Macarena. :headache:

I mentioned "Don't Worry Be Happy" as making my ears bleed, but I forgot about Macarena....obviously I've been successful at blocking it from my memory. Until NOW. :irked:

Totally agree here I love (mostly 70's) lite rock, well almost all rock from the 70's...The 80's kinda fell flat, alot of it sounded the same to me though there were a few good ones sprinkled here and there...70's ruled.

When searchin' Round the dial,it always ends up on the lite rock or 70's station...Yeah...

Here are a few omissions:

Len - "If You Steal My Sunshine"
Sugarloaf - "Green-eyed Lady" (one of my faves)
Dead or Alive - "You Spin Me (Right 'Round)"
Billy Paul - "Me and Mrs. Jones" (one of my faves)

And, Blind Melon should not be on the list. They had at least one more hit before Shannon Hoon died, "Galaxie".
