Something I posted in the mod forum just a few minutes ago made me think of something...

Do you guys have any words/phrases that you use online but never actually say in your real life? (Other than net-speak, such as lol or brb 'n stuff.)

I say "ya'll" online but you'll never hear me say that in real life... I have no idea why I even say it online!

I text or type "howdy" a lot myself, but never actually greet someone in real life saying it.

I'll occasionally type "folks" but never say it.

And that reminds me of something I read years ago. We tend to think of our vocabulary as one cohesive thing, but we actually have FOUR vocabularies -- reading, writing, speaking, listening. Our reading vocabulary is BY FAR the largest of the four. There are words you get the gist of from having read them before, but you aren't comfortable enough with them to be able to define them exactly or use them in speaking or writing (and you might not remember how to spell them.) Pretty interesting, huh? Goes right along with your point, TMM.
