Love-it

Not much snow this year. Bad ski season.

I don't have time to ski but my wife lives for it and will drive 100 miles or more one way every day to ski around the Lake Tahoe area, she likes being home every night. Unfortunately we don't have much for ski areas near by, one small part time facility, and yes not enough snow this year.

I know what a vegan is and I've never been to California. I used to have a friend who said she was vegan but she wasn't really. She occasionally would eat ice cream so she was actually a lacto-vegetarian. I knew another woman who truly was a vegan - and she lived in California! She wasn't preachy about it though - she was actually a vegan due to food allergies rather than making any kind of statement or anything.

Hi, I'm Monstro. It's nice to meet you. Now you know another vegan

You guys are making me homesick.

- You know how to eat an artichoke properly.
I am the only person on the east coast who knows how to to eat an artichoke. Not that there's a decent artichoke to be had...
- You are forced to speak Spanish by osmosis.
A childhood in the Bay Area prepared me for life in many ways, learning to be biligual was one of them.
- The Republican governor who's father is an ex-Nazi is married to a Kennedy, smokes cigars in the most anti-tobacco state, and conducts most of his business in a special smoke tent on the capitol lawn. He also is affectionately called the “Gropeinator” and starred in the movie, "Kindergarden Cop".
My friends say they're not unhappy with the fruits of his labour, overall.
- You know the difference between Masala Dosa and Samosa.
Hell, yes.
- People would rather have a Trader Joe’s in their neighborhood than a real grocery store.
I frequent mine in the neighbourhood.
- Plastic Surgeons advertise on grocery cart seat flaps.
Surprisingly, Delaware's magazine Delaware Today has more ads for plastic surgeons than anything.

I've lived in all 4 Cals...

NoCal (BayArea and slightly above...sorry Humboldt/Mendocino... no identity, but you've got your world class herb, so it's all good). THE BAY AREA HAS BEEN THE BREEDING GROUND FOR MORE OF EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT AMERICA THAN ANY OTHER AREA... period, game over... Nobel Prizes, business, science, political currents, local economy the list goes on. Sorry, check the scoreboard if you disagree.
I concur although I get flak here on the East Coast for even thinking this.
- No Californian really knows what California Cuisine is, even though it is touted acoss the nation. I suppose it is anything fresh.
I always wondered this myself.
- We tend to call the bad parts of rich cities "Baja". As in - "Oh she's not rich she only lives in Baja Beverly Hills." or "that greasy diner is across the freeway in Baja Palo Alto."
:biggrin1:

- LA drivers are the best in the world. Fast, smart, concientious and decisive. You'd get eaten alive if you weren't. Just the culture. Driving is an esteemed skill.
A Truism
- Californians could care less what any other states or the world, for that matter, thinks of us. We are smug.
They can afford to be.
- Diverity is good here, it works for the most part.
One of the good reasons they have to be smug.
- Dirty Harry is the mayor of Carmel. "Make my day."
Too bad Jello Biafra didn't win the election for mayor in San Francisco.

You in Bedrock. Get the fuck out. Grab betty by the tits and move. Fuck Fred and Wima

Bedrock is in California - remember the LaBrea Tar Pits episode? Yeah, Bedrock is the former LA.

As someone from the complete "opposite end of the universe" in MI, here's how close and how far your assumptions are...

1. - You buy a Prius for the "eco" status it conveys and not for the gas mileage.
Whaaaaaaaaaa?

The Prius is not in reality the best eco friendly car because of its rather large carbon footprint of all the energy and material needed to make it, and later dispose of it. The large number of toxic batteries that need to be disposed of every 10 years is a major hit to the environment as well. So in reality it is more of a status car here, a "I'm more green than you" statement.

9) Um, seriously, you're complaining about Arnold, when MI has granholm? Seriously,.... *shaking head* That is "Ahhnold" to all you non-Californians. He is not a typical Republican which is his saving grace.

10) Pot is the #1 agricultural crop around the world - since 1285 - still going strong! Who smoked pot in 1285?

11) We see commercials for "Jack in the box" and "Sonic," (accounting for about 30% of commercial air time) but we will never see a single one in our state.I'm partial to the Steak and Shake commercials myself.

I am the only person on the east coast who knows how to to eat an artichoke. Not that there's a decent artichoke to be had...
I remember going on group dinner on the east coast where they served baby shrimp filled artichokes. They were all dismayed that I was actually eating the green flower like thing that held the shrimp.

My friends say they're not unhappy with the fruits of his labour, overall.
Nope - haven't seen many fruits. We did borrow a bunch of money to shore up our crumbling infrastructure however.

Hell, yes.
This place is a haven for excellent Indian food. I love the stuff too - southern and northern.

Too bad Jello Biafra didn't win the election for mayor in San Francisco.
I think the current board of supervisors would think he was too conservative.

I've traveled by car through every state but Alaska - that's still on my list.

(And maybe Alaska will take back Fort Ross, if Norte is so unappreciated )

SanDiegoBoxerGuy, you will love Alaska. Hopefully kalipygian will back me up here. I lived there in my teenage years and attended UAF for a while before transfering. Absolutely beautiful.

I've lived in Europe and all over the US including San Francisco, Monterey, Seattle, Phoenix, Portland and New York (was married to a New Yorker who was amazing). Not to generalize because it is never all or none and this is just MY experience, but I found New Yorkers to be very arrogant. Putting down the west coast for being superficial was common, yet in the same conversation all discussion is about wanting men with money and women who are/look like models. I also found Seattle to be very wrapped up in brands and labels. Who made your shoes, what kind of purse do you have. Of course, it may be different now. Phoenix was the most relaxed and friendly.

I like California, and have made several long visits. It is curious that I haven't noticed that anyone has mentioned the redwoods, they are nowhere else in the world, and there in nothing to compare with being in a redwood forest.

Regarding seeing Alaska, paraphrasing John Muir, to whom the quote is attributed, a person should see Alaska when they are old, otherwise nothing they see subsequently will impress them much. (the 15 highest peaks on the continent are here)

I agree, and believe that is true with so many places. When you are young you are looking for the good times in new places. When you are older, you tend to appreciate the beauty around you.

I lived in the middle of no where, and my family still has some land and a cabin, so I manage to make it back up there once in a while. Three years ago we were able to join some friends on their sailboat and do some kayaking around the glaciers. The beauty is just so overwhelming.

I am writing this from 15 miles off the San Francisco coast and it has to be one of the nicest views around. Marin headlands( not a building in sight) Golden gate bridge, south bay hills. There is something special about this area. The fog may roll in at any moment but right now I would not want to be anywhere else.

Although it is such a beautiful place and with great weather - I think it is just getting too crowded here. So many want to come and it seems we just can't keep up. As a result it has gotten astronomically expensive to live here. And i will say that the quality of life has definitely suffered so much so that there has been an exodus of Californians to our neighboring states - Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada.

I love Trader Joe's! I don't know that they have any around here, though. They had them in Indianapolis.

Sonic and Jack in the Box... They had Sonic in Indianapolis but they went out of business there, although other parts of Indiana still have Sonic. There are lots of Sonics in San Antonio. One is just down the street from me.

Jack in the Box is not in Indiana, but there is one just down the street from me here, going the opposite direction from where the Sonic is.

I haven't eaten at an In & Out. First time I heard of that name I cracked up! They don't have any of those any place I have been. But the funniest fast food place name I have ever heard of was a locally-owned one in Indianapolis that I unfortunately never got to eat at before they went out of business. It was a hot dog place owned by a guy named Dick who was very tall, and he called the restaurant... Big Dick's Dogs! I first saw that in a restaurant guide and did a double-take when I saw that name! I went by there once while they were still in business but never did get to go inside or order anything.

Texas has a burger chain called Whataburger. I haven't seen Whataburgers in any other state besides Texas. They may exist in other states, I just haven't seen them.

We have a few Whataburgers here in New Mexico. I just love their chocolate shakes! We also have Trader Joe's in Albuquerque and Santa Fe (people here in Albuquerque went apeshit when ours finally opened last year), Sonic (plenty of those here) and I believe we also have Jack-in-the-Box here, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I was wondering if Whataburger was anywhere else. I've never been to New Mexico. I've only seen them in Texas. I think an online friend mentioned that there was one or two in Oklahoma too, but I've never seen one there. Of course, I haven't been in Oklahoma since I was a child. I may not have noticed it then.

I now notice when I travel, any kind of business (especially if it's a chain) that I haven't seen before. I also like stopping into unique locally-owned businesses. I especially like the locally owned places and am saddened that many of them are closing down because they can't compete with the big chains. I don't want every place to seem exactly the same, with all the same businesses. I want each place to have its own unique local character.

Ooh, I agree! We have plenty of great local restaurants here in New Mexico. Especially Mexican ones!

We also have a local chain of hamburger places called Blake's Lotaburger. I've always wondered if they have any in Texas. I always heard that they do, but I think they're mainly near the state lines of Texas and New Mexico. Have you ever heard of them? They have the best green chile cheeseburgers you'll ever taste! And their strawberry shakes used to be my favorite, but I now think that Sonic has the best strawberry shakes.

I haven't heard of Blake's Lotaburger. Green chile cheeseburgers though - sounds good! I haven't been in the western part of Texas. Mostly just Dallas, Houston, Austin, and of course San Antonio. Oh, and on the road between some of those cities.

There are lots of locally owned Mexican restaurants here too. I like that. And of course I always like the ethnic restaurants. I ate at a Vietnamese restaurant on Thursday night.

Haven't tried the strawberry shakes at Sonic. I love their watermelon slushes, though. I rarely have shakes, and have chocolate when I do have them. I think Jack in the Box has pretty good shakes. I had one there once.

no one from california calls it "cali." only people who aren't from california call it that, and yes, it's insulting.

southern california thinks it's better than northern california and northern california thinks it's better than southern california.

in-n-out burgers are hands down the absolute best burger anyone will ever eat.

everything is "green," "eco-friendly," "organic," "made from natural/recylced products," "sugar free," "no-carb," "free range," and "compostable."

it's not unusual for your waiters, baristas, and even your child's teachers to have tattoos, facial piercings, and pink hair.

snowboarding and surfing are possible in the same day.

the first sight of rain fall causes 3 hour traffic jams on all freeways in every direction.

you have seen several celebrities in person (and without make up).

you have seen commercials, movies, or tv shows being filmed.

you or someone you know has been to a same sex wedding or baby shower with a sperm/egg donor.

I could not have said it better. I grew up in LA and have always had a love/hate feeling about it. The only thing that I can add is that if you are in NYC in February it looks like a black and white movie, and if you hop on a flight back to LA you are living in technicolor again.
