Tiki Barge crash in Cleveland: Boat collides with Nautica Queen | wkyc.com
Cleveland-- at times-- tries so hard to be the Key West of the Midwest. It's difficult, because even when hammered after a few glasses of tequila-infused margaritas, the Cuyahoga River doesn't remind one of palm trees and cheeseburgers in paradise. Nevertheless, the Tiki Barge has earned rave reviews from bachelorette parties and couples celebrating maskless birthday celebrations aboard this thatched-roof bar as it passes by iron ore ships docked along the river.
Until yesterday all had been going well with these floating Happy Hours and there was no indication this two-hour cruise would be any different. The captain hadn't been imbibing, the river was tranquil and his passengers pleased as he guided the 20-passenger vessel slowly up the Cuyahoga. There were no icebergs anywhere to be found on Lake Erie this late May. No, the only impediment to safety aboard the Tiki Barge may have been the captain's location aboard the ship-- at the very stern behind the bar. A stout, heavyset man of less than six-feet, it was somewhat like trying to steer a bus situated behind a throng of tall, intoxicated revelers.
His first indication something was amiss may have been the short shrieks of panic coming from his female guests. At the last moment, as he stood on his tippy-toes and peered around the taller males, he could see a white hull looming ahead, closing quickly like a ghostly white apparition. This captain must have felt the identical raw emotions as Captain Piero Calamai of the Italian liner SS Andrea Doria in 1956, as it collided with the Scandinavian passenger ship SS Stockholm near the Nantucket Lightship.
Fortunately, but for a few spilled drinks, everybody reached the dock unscathed.
